…Kaushik has an incredible eye for detail and an exceptional talent for capturing those fleeting, candid moments that made our wedding so unique. The photos are absolutely stunning—full of emotion, vibrancy, and creativity. He didn’t just take photographs; he told the story of our wedding day in the most heartfelt and artistic way possible.

…Kaushik's work is fantastic and he took so much stress out of our special day. He and his team are highly professional, fun and friendly and work with you to capture the shots that you want. He captured some amazing moments of both us and our guests, some natural, some posed but all truly wonderful. We were blown away by our albums and videos and have no hesitation in recommending him to our family and friends.

Reesha G., Google review, 2015

Three centres

Steel city, minster town and racing city

South Yorkshire's weddings gather around three places with very different characters. Sheffield, a city since 1893, is known for steel: crucible steel was developed there in the 1740s and stainless steel invented in 1912. It is also a remarkably green city, with about 61% green space, a third of it inside the Peak District National Park, and five rivers meeting within its boundary.

Rotherham, a market town where the Rother meets the Don, grew on coal, iron and steel, and its Walker family foundries cast most of the guns for HMS Victory. Doncaster, a city since 2022, sits on the East Coast Main Line about 156 miles from King's Cross and is home to a racecourse with two Group 1 flat races.

Sheffield and Rotherham sit side by side, linked by the Supertram tram-train, while Doncaster lies further east towards the flat country of the Humber.

Sheffield's register office

Four rooms inside Sheffield Town Hall

Sheffield Register Office holds ceremonies inside the Grade I listed Town Hall on Pinstone Street. The rooms are sized for different weddings: the Loxley Room for up to 16 guests, the Arundel and Norfolk Rooms for up to 45, and the Hallam Room for up to 56. The register office itself is reached from Norfolk Street at the back of the building, opposite St Paul's Hotel, while ceremony guests use the Town Hall's front entrance.

The Town Hall also has a licensed reception suite: the Mirror Room and the Mandela Room each take up to 120, or 220 across the full suite, and confetti is permitted, which is worth knowing if you plan a confetti exit.

Straight outside are the Peace Gardens, on the former churchyard of St Paul's, with the Goodwin Fountain's 89 jets, and next door the Winter Garden, a 70-metre glasshouse with more than 2,500 plants. Both are free to enter and ideal for portraits a few steps from the ceremony.

Rotherham and Doncaster ceremonies

Riverside House, Clifton Park and Priory Place

Rotherham's statutory ceremonies take place at the Register Office in Riverside House on Main Street, for up to four guests including the two witnesses. For more guests, the council holds premium ceremonies for up to 30 at Clifton Park Museum, a restored Grade II* listed building in parkland. Rotherham's approved list also includes 17th and 18th-century manor house hotels and a stately home near the town.

City of Doncaster Council runs its premium register office ceremonies at 3 Priory Place, with an enhanced room with a central aisle and the Priory Suite for up to 50 guests, or 30 for Tuesday standard plus ceremonies. Standard two-witness ceremonies are held at the Civic Office on Waterdale.

Doncaster's licensed premises run from Regency and Victorian country house hotels in large parkland to a racecourse, a stadium and a wildlife park. Tell us your venue and we will plan around it.

Portraits

Botanical gardens, ancient woods and a serpentine lake

Sheffield Botanical Gardens opened in 1836 and cover 19 acres near the city centre, with a Grade II listed Glass Pavilion and more than 18 themed garden areas. Ecclesall Woods, the largest ancient semi-natural woodland in South Yorkshire, has over 15 km of footpaths for a quieter woodland walk.

In Rotherham, Clifton Park surrounds a house designed by John Carr of York and completed in 1784. The 15th-century Chapel of Our Lady on Rotherham Bridge is one of four surviving bridge chapels in England, and the Grade I listed Rotherham Minster rises above the town.

Near Doncaster, Cusworth Park was remodelled by Richard Woods as a 250-acre landscape with a serpentine chain of three lakes, the Rock Arch and the Cascade, around the Grade I listed Cusworth Hall.

Dates, seasons and distance

Race weeks, Peak District light and the journey north

Doncaster's St Leger Meeting runs over four days each September, and Rotherham holds its show in Clifton Park every September too. Hotels and roads get busy on those dates, so where an overnight stay is needed it is worth settling early, and we allow more time between venues.

The Peak District edge on Sheffield's western side brings moody skies and changeable weather, while Doncaster in the east is flatter and more open. Spring and early autumn give gentle light everywhere, and we agree an indoor portrait plan for any season.

South Yorkshire is the nearest of the northern counties to Northwood, but it is still over 130 miles. Your written quote shows the travel and any hotel night before you book. Read our guides to Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster.

Planning

Planning around South Yorkshire

01

Pick the right Town Hall room

Sheffield's ceremony rooms take 16, 45 or 56 guests. Choose by your guest list so the room feels full but not cramped in the photographs.

02

Check the St Leger dates

Doncaster's four-day St Leger Meeting each September fills hotels and roads. Avoid clashing, or plan for it early.

03

Use the Winter Garden

Next to Sheffield Town Hall, the Winter Garden is a free, dry backdrop for portraits when the weather turns.

04

Statutory means four guests

Rotherham's Riverside House statutory ceremony allows up to four guests including witnesses. For more, look at Clifton Park Museum.
