Where the day happens

An Indian wedding in Sheffield, step by step

An Indian wedding in Sheffield can move between home, a place of worship and a hall. The haldi or pithi happens at home, with family close around; the sangeet or garba is in a hall or hotel; and the main ceremony may be at a mandir, a gurdwara or a licensed venue, with a reception that evening or the next day.

Kaushik plans each part on its own terms. The haldi is close and joyful, so he works near the family; the sangeet is fast and dark, so he watches the stage and the floor; the ceremony is slower and needs patience around the priest or granthi.

Tell us your mandir, gurdwara or mosque and any photography guidance it gives, with the addresses for each event. That lets us plan the route between Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster and the positions at each.

Hindu weddings

Mandap, pheras and vidaai

A Hindu ceremony has a clear order: the baraat arrives, the jaimala garlands are exchanged, the kanyadaan follows, then the pheras around the sacred fire and the sindoor and mangalsutra. Kaushik keeps the priest's space clear while staying close enough for each step, and shoots wide enough to show the families watching.

Some Sheffield venues cater for different cultural traditions, including listed halls in the city centre. Check the venue's rules on the havan fire before you book. The national Hindu weddings page and our Sheffield Hindu wedding guide go into more detail.

Sikh and Muslim weddings

Gurdwara mornings and nikah ceremonies

A Sikh wedding morning usually starts with the milni outside the gurdwara, then the anand karaj inside, with four laavan around the Guru Granth Sahib. Shoes come off and heads are covered, and the photographer's position is agreed with the granthi beforehand. The reception follows at a hall or hotel. See Sikh weddings.

For Muslim weddings, the nikah may be at a mosque, at home or at the venue, and the walima can be the same day or later. Kaushik stays quiet and still during the nikah and prayers and follows the imam's guidance. Read Muslim weddings and the Rotherham Muslim wedding page.

Guests and halls

Receptions for large families in the three towns

South Yorkshire has rooms for most sizes of reception. Sheffield Town Hall's licensed reception suite takes up to 220 across the Mirror Room and Mandela Room, and Doncaster's approved list runs from country houses with ballrooms to sporting venues for larger evening numbers.

For receptions of several hundred, we fix the stage photographs as a numbered list beforehand, so the portraits move quickly. The stage position, the couple's entrance and the timing of speeches all affect the photographs, so share the running order early.

A second photographer can cover the guests and the other family's preparations while Kaushik stays with the couple.

Distance and planning

Three days in South Yorkshire from Northwood

South Yorkshire is the closest of the northern counties to our studio, but at 131 to 136 miles it is still a long day's travel. For multi-day weddings, each event is planned and costed separately, with the travel and any hotel nights shown on their own lines and agreed in writing before you book.

Sheffield and Rotherham are linked by the Supertram tram-train, and Doncaster is on the East Coast Main Line, so events spread across the county can be reached without long drives. Send us every address and we will time the journeys.

Civil ceremony

Adding the legal ceremony

Couples often hold the civil ceremony separately. Sheffield's Town Hall rooms take 16 to 56 guests, Doncaster's Priory Suite at 3 Priory Place takes up to 50, and Rotherham's premium ceremonies at Clifton Park Museum take up to 30.

A civil ceremony can be photographed as a shorter booking, with portraits in the Peace Gardens or Winter Garden in Sheffield, or Clifton Park in Rotherham. Its travel is quoted in writing like every other day.

Planning

Planning around South Yorkshire

01

Ask about the havan

Fire rules vary between venues. Confirm in writing that your venue allows the havan for the pheras before you book.

02

Share temple and gurdwara guidance

Tell us your mandir or gurdwara and pass on any photography guidance its committee gives, so we can plan around it.

03

Time the sangeet

A sangeet moves quickly. Tell us when the family performances start so the key dances are covered.

04

Keep the hotel close

Between events, an overnight stay near Sheffield is usually sensible at this distance and is set out in your written quote.
