During the most solemn passages we step back and lengthen the lens, so the granthi's words or the sacred fire are photographed from a respectful distance.

The reception is its own event, so we cover the speeches, the entrance and the dancing with the same care we brought to the morning rituals. The mehndi and sangeet are where families let go, so we shoot loose and candid there, catching the laughter, the songs and the henna drying on open hands. We are at ease with large, multi-day celebrations and intimate ceremonies alike.

We often take couples to Clifton Park, a Victorian park with a museum and formal gardens for a few quiet portraits, and Rotherham Minster, the medieval Church of All Saints in the town centre is a lovely backdrop nearby.

The Mandap, the Palki and the Rites Within

The vows at a nikah end in the joyful declaration that the couple are married, and the room's relief and delight are ours to keep. For Sikh couples, the Anand Karaj and the four laavan in the gurdwara are the heart of the day, photographed with the calm the Guru Granth Sahib deserves. Around the sacred fire, the seven steps of the saptapadi bind a Hindu couple together, and we photograph each vow from close enough to feel its weight.

For Muslim families the walima is a warm celebration in its own right, and we cover it in full. We capture the family moments around the couple, not just the rituals. The bride's farewell, as she leaves her parents' home, is the most tender passage of many Asian weddings, and we photograph it with the gentleness it deserves.
