Superb and highly professional wedding photographer. We had the pleasure of working with Kaushik Bathia Photography for a recent wedding at Orchardleigh Estate.

Google review, 2015

…Kaushik is incredibly talented, artistic, and truly gifted with a photographer’s vision. He knows exactly what he wants each frame to look like and how to get the best out of his subjects. Honestly, there were moments during the shoot when I’d wonder, “What is he making me do?” – but when I saw the final shots, I was blown away. Every image looked beautiful, intentional, and natural.

The communities

Green Street, Brick Lane and Ilford: where the wedding week starts

Several East London boroughs have large South Asian communities. Newham had 351,030 residents at the 2021 census, with Bangladeshi residents the largest single ethnic group at 15.9%, and 34.8% of residents Muslim, the second-highest share of any London borough. Brick Lane in Tower Hamlets is described as the heart of the country's Bangladeshi community, and at the 2011 census 65.5% of Redbridge residents identified with an ethnic group other than White British.

Before the ceremonies come the outfits and the jewellery. Green Street, running from Romford Road to Barking Road near Upton Park station, is a regional shopping street for South Asian fashion, jewellery, fabrics and food, and Queen's Market sits beside it. If the shopping trip for the lehenga or sherwani matters to you, it can become part of a pre-wedding shoot, with the shop's permission first.

Planning the week

A multi-day plan across Newham, Redbridge and Waltham Forest

Write the events down in order with the borough beside each one: a haldi or maiyan at home in Walthamstow, a mehndi in a hall in Ilford, the religious ceremony on the main day, the civil ceremony at East Ham Town Hall, and the reception. Seeing the list makes it clear which days can share a journey and which cannot, and it becomes the backbone of the quote.

Every event on this page sits within about 20 miles of Northwood, so each day can be covered as its own trip. The written quote lists each event separately, and the travel from Northwood for each day of your East London wedding week is set out in it before you book.

Home events need a little thought too. Tell us which room has the best window, where the mehndi artist will sit and when the elders are expected. On the main day, a second photographer can photograph the other family's preparations while Kaushik covers yours, so neither household misses its morning.

Venues

Banqueting suites, town halls and hotel ballrooms for big guest lists

Large receptions need large rooms, and East London has them. Redbridge's licensed list includes a banqueting venue that hosts mehndi, nikah, baraat and walima events, and Newham's licensed venues include hotels and rooms beside the Royal Docks. Once the caterer and decorator have agreed a room layout, send it to us so the stage, the entrance and the dance floor can be planned for.

With several hundred guests, the stage and the family tables decide most of the photographs. Kaushik asks for the running order and a written list of the family groups you want, with names, so the stage photographs move steadily without anyone important being missed.

Civil ceremonies can be held on a separate day. In East London that means Fellowship Square in Walthamstow, St George's Town Hall on Cable Street, East Ham Town Hall, Redbridge Town Hall in Ilford or the Lanchester Suite in Hackney, each with its own capacity. A small civil ceremony earlier in the week also gives you calm portraits away from the crowd.

By faith

Hindu, Sikh and Muslim weddings in the five boroughs

Hindu and Gujarati weddings centre on the mandap and the pheras around the sacred fire, with haldi and sangeet in the days before. The East London Hindu wedding page covers mandap timing, the havan fire and the photographs around the ceremony. Ask your venue early about its rules on open flames.

Sikh weddings centre on the anand karaj and the four laavan in the gurdwara, with heads covered and shoes removed. The Sikh wedding page for East London explains the morning, the milni and the doli. For Muslim weddings, the nikah, mehndi and walima are covered on the East London Muslim wedding page, including quiet during prayers.

Mixed and interfaith weddings are welcome too. If the day combines two traditions, send both running orders, and Kaushik will plan the photography so that neither ceremony is rushed and both families see their own customs recorded.

Planning

Planning around East London

01

List each event by borough

Write down the haldi, mehndi, sangeet, ceremony and reception with the borough for each, so days in Hackney and Ilford can be planned as separate trips.

02

Book the town hall slot

If the civil ceremony is separate, fix the time at East Ham, Fellowship Square, St George's or Redbridge Town Hall first, then plan the religious day around it.

03

Mind the Epping Forest rule

Photography on Wanstead Flats needs a City of London Corporation licence. If it cannot be arranged in time, choose another park for portraits.

04

Name the must-have groups

Big receptions move fast. A short list of the family groups you want, with names, keeps the stage photographs moving and nobody is forgotten.

05

Think about trains for guests

Stratford and Ilford both have Elizabeth line trains. Add the nearest station to the invitation for relatives travelling in from further away.
