Spitalfields

Fournier Street, Christ Church and dinner on Brick Lane

Fournier Street in Spitalfields is lined with houses mainly dating from the 1720s, built for Huguenot families whose silk looms took the top floors for the light. The narrow street of old house fronts gives a couple close, intimate frames. These are people's homes, so the shoot keeps off doorsteps and moves along quietly.

At the end of the street stands Christ Church Spitalfields, a Grade I listed church by Nicholas Hawksmoor built between 1714 and 1729, which gives a strong, simple background. Brick Lane, known to some as Banglatown and the heart of the country's Bangladeshi community, is close by with its curry restaurants, so an early evening shoot can finish at dinner. The Tower Hamlets portrait page lists more of the borough's settings.

On the water

Limehouse Basin, Island Gardens and the Thames Barrier

Limehouse Basin opened on 1 August 1820 as the eastern end of the Regent's Canal, linking the canal and the Limehouse Cut to the Thames, and is now a marina. Boats, lock gates and still water suit a relaxed walk at golden hour. Island Gardens, a small Green Flag riverside park on Saunders Ness Road, looks across the Thames to the Greenwich view Canaletto painted, and the foot tunnel to Greenwich starts there.

Downriver, Thames Barrier Park in Silvertown opened in November 2000 on a former chemical works site and has a sunken garden and water fountains looking out over the Thames Barrier. Its sunken garden gives a more modern look that sits well with a dressier second outfit. Choose one riverside setting rather than three, so the time goes on pictures, not travel.

Industry and gardens

Three Mills, Abbey Mills and the Olympic Park in blossom

The House Mill at Three Mills on the River Lea was built in 1776 by Daniel Bisson and is a Grade I listed building and the largest tidal mill in the world. The mill and the river around it make a textured, historic backdrop. Nearby, Abbey Mills Pumping Station on Abbey Lane was built in 1865 to 1868 to designs by Joseph Bazalgette and Charles Driver and is Grade II* listed.

For a softer look, the London Blossom Garden in the north of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park has 33 blossom trees, one per London borough, planted in three circles; time a spring shoot for the flowers. At Canary Wharf, Crossrail Place has a 4,160 square metre roof garden above the Elizabeth line station, with plants arranged either side of the Greenwich Meridian, which suits a couple who both work nearby.

Green and old

Walthamstow Village, Wanstead Park and Claybury's bluebells

Walthamstow Village, a conservation area since 1967, centres on St Mary's Church, founded in the 12th century, the 15th-century timber-framed Ancient House and almshouses from the 16th and 18th centuries. See the Waltham Forest portrait page for more of that borough.

In Redbridge, Wanstead Park is a 140-acre Grade II listed woodland park on the site of the 18th-century Wanstead House, run by the City of London Corporation since 1881. Claybury Woods and Park has ancient oak and hornbeam woodland known for bluebells in spring, and Elmhurst Gardens in South Woodford turns colourful in autumn. Those seasons suit an engagement shoot booked a few months before a summer wedding.

Before the wedding

Timing a pre-wedding shoot, including an Asian pre-wedding shoot

An engagement shoot, also called a pre-wedding shoot, gets you comfortable in front of the camera and builds a rapport with your photographer, which shows on the day itself. Book it far enough ahead that the pictures are ready for save-the-dates, a wedding website or a large print for guests to sign at the reception. It can be added to your East London wedding photography.

For an Asian wedding in East London, a pre-wedding shoot can be a bigger production with outfit changes, so plan a nearby place to change and allow the longer end of the time. Couples who would rather a polished look whatever the weather can use the Northwood studio instead. Travel from Northwood to your East London location is quoted up front and set out in writing, and the national couples photoshoot page has more on how sessions run.

Planning

Planning around East London

01

Quiet on Fournier Street

Fournier Street's 1720s houses are private homes. The shoot keeps off doorsteps, works along the pavement and moves on before it gets in anyone's way.

02

Golden hour at Limehouse

Limehouse Basin's marina and lock gates suit the last hour of daylight. Arrive a little early so the first nerves are gone when the light turns warm.

03

Blossom in the Olympic Park

The London Blossom Garden's 33 trees flower in spring. An engagement shoot timed for the blossom gives soft, seasonal save-the-date pictures.

04

Outfit changes nearby

An Asian pre-wedding shoot can include several outfits. Choose a setting with somewhere close to change, such as a friend's flat or a café nearby.

Good to know

Engagement and couples shoots in East London: questions answered

Yes. It is a public street of 1720s Huguenot houses, so the shoot works along the pavement and keeps clear of residents' doorsteps. Christ Church Spitalfields at the end of the street adds a second backdrop.

Yes, potentially: Wanstead Flats falls inside Epping Forest, where the City of London Corporation licenses all commercial photography. If you would like the Flats, say so early so the licence can be sorted before the date. Wanstead Park or Claybury Woods are other green options in Redbridge.

Usually one to two hours with one or two outfits. That leaves time to settle in, walk between two nearby spots, such as Limehouse Basin and the canal, and catch a mix of guided and candid pictures.

Yes. Brick Lane, with its Bangladeshi curry restaurants, is a short walk from Fournier Street and Christ Church, so an early evening shoot in Spitalfields can finish at your table. Some of the most relaxed pictures come from that last stretch.

Coordinated, comfortable outfits in two or three complementary colours, without matching exactly and without big logos. A dressier second look works well at Thames Barrier Park or Crossrail Place, and flat shoes help on the cobbles and canal paths.

For an engagement shoot, Spitalfields and Limehouse in Tower Hamlets are about 17 miles from Northwood, Hackney about 16, and Newham and Redbridge just under 20. Your couples quote lists the travel from Northwood in writing before you book.

Couples and engagement prices come by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383. An engagement shoot can also be added to a wedding booking, and the travel from Northwood appears on the same written quote.
