Engagement and Couples Photographer in Hertfordshire

An engagement or pre-wedding shoot is time together in front of the camera before the wedding day. Hertfordshire offers canal locks, castle mounds, chalk streams and garden-city avenues, and Kaushik meets you at whichever one means most to you.

The short answer

Where can we have a pre-wedding shoot in Hertfordshire?

Hertfordshire has plenty of settings for a pre-wedding shoot: Batchworth Lock on the Grand Union Canal at Rickmansworth, the Roman walls in Verulamium Park, St Albans, the Norman motte in Hertford Castle's grounds, or Parkway, the near mile-long mall through Welwyn Garden City. Kaushik meets you at the place you choose, or you can use the Northwood studio. Travel from Northwood appears in your written quote before you book.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Hertfordshire, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

My two sisters and I ‘ the golden girls’ had a great, hilarious photo session. Kaushik is very professional and took some amazing photos especially when we were laughing so much trying to get up from the floor. Can’t wait to see ‘air brushed’ version. Well at 75 you need a little help. Definitely recommend Kashuik. He enjoyed our craziness!

Why do it

What an engagement shoot does before a Hertfordshire wedding

The first reason is practical. Most couples have never been photographed together for longer than a few phone snaps, and a session with Kaushik shows you how he works: where he stands, how he asks you to move, and how quickly the stiffness wears off. By the wedding morning you already know the routine, which helps when the day is moving fast and there are guests watching.

The second reason is the photographs themselves. Couples use them on save-the-date cards, on a wedding website or in a frame on the guest book table. A shoot somewhere that matters to you, the common you walk on Sundays or the street where you first met, gives pictures the wedding day cannot. If you are marrying in the county, the Hertfordshire wedding photography guide explains how the day itself is planned.

Canals and chalk streams

Locks, lakes and chalk streams in the Colne, Gade and Chess valleys

South-west Hertfordshire is threaded with water, and most of it is close to the studio. Batchworth Lock, Lock 81 on the Grand Union Canal at Rickmansworth, is home to the Rickmansworth Waterways Trust canal centre and its heritage working boat Roger. Beside the Aquadrome, Stocker's Lake holds the largest heronry in Hertfordshire. North of Watford, North Grove Lock near Hunton Bridge has been Grade II listed since 1985, and the canal runs on through Kings Langley, where it dates from 1797.

For a quieter setting, the River Chess flows through water meadows at Frogmore and past the watercress beds at Sarratt Bottom, the only working beds left on the river. The Withey Beds off Moor Lane, between Rickmansworth and Moor Park, is one of the few remaining wetlands in the county and is still managed by rotational willow coppicing. All of these are under seven miles from Northwood, so an evening shoot after work is realistic.

Old stone and brick

Castle mounds, a medieval belfry and old market towns

Couples who like history have a long list to choose from. In St Albans, the Clock Tower in the Market Place rang the town curfew until 1863, and Verulamium Park still shows the walls of the Roman city and the outline of the London Gate. Kingsbury Watermill on the River Ver dates from about 1570 and is Grade II listed. Old Hatfield has St Etheldreda's Church above its streets, with the Salisbury Chapel built by Robert Cecil.

Berkhamsted Castle on White Hill, next to the rear entrance of the station, is free to enter. Hertford Castle's grounds hold a tree-covered Norman motte beside the River Lea, a stone curtain wall built by Henry II between 1170 and 1174, and a moat garden opened in 1951. In Bishop's Stortford, the motte of Waytemore Castle rises in Castle Park, with riverside walks along the Stort.

Public places come with the public, so a weekday or an early start keeps the background clear. Some sites set their own terms for organised photography, and we check them before the day rather than assume.

Gardens and avenues

Rose walks, wisteria and a garden-city avenue

Chorleywood House Estate has a Sunken Garden first designed for Lady Ela Russell and a Victorian iron wisteria circle whose plants are over 100 years old and flower between April and June. Three Rivers District Council points photographers to the house, its summer house and the woodland paths down to the River Chess. In Bushey, the Rose Garden laid out in 1913 by Thomas Mawson with Sir Hubert von Herkomer has a sunken garden, a rose walk, a pergola and cloisters.

Further north, Welwyn Garden City's Parkway runs for almost a mile through the middle of the town, and the view south along it was once called one of the world's finest urban vistas. In Ware, the 18th-century gazebos that innkeepers built as summerhouses along the River Lea line the north bank, many of them restored. Hitchin Lavender at Ickleford grows lavender in an area known for it for about 500 years.

Asian pre-wedding shoots

Pre-wedding shoots for Hindu, Sikh and Muslim couples in Hertfordshire

For an Asian couple a pre-wedding shoot can carry extra weight. It may be the first time you wear coordinated outfits together, it supplies photographs for a mehndi or sangeet display, and it gives both families something to share before a wedding that may run over several days. Some couples choose two looks: traditional clothes by water or in a formal garden, then something casual in a town centre.

Heavier lehengas and sherwanis call for firm paths and a short walk from the car, so we pick spots with easy access. The Northwood studio is another option for the formal outfits, followed by an outdoor location for the relaxed look. For the wedding days themselves, read the Hertfordshire Asian wedding photography guide.

Timing and travel

When to book, and how far Kaushik travels across the county

Three to nine months before the wedding suits most couples: early enough for save-the-dates, late enough that you look as you will on the day. Spring brings bluebells to Croxleyhall Woods and to Carpenters Wood in Chorleywood, autumn turns the old beech woods to copper, and summer evenings give long, low light along the canal.

Kaushik travels across Hertfordshire for couples shoots, from Croxley Green at 3.7 miles to Royston at 34.9. Travel from Northwood is written into your quote before anything is booked, and the session price is given on request. An engagement shoot can also be added to a wedding booking, as the couples photoshoot and wedding photography pages explain, and the Hertfordshire photographer hub lists every other service in the county.

Planning

Planning around Hertfordshire

01

Evening light by the water

Batchworth Lock and the Aquadrome face open water, so a summer evening slot gives low, warm light across the canal and the lakes.

02

Avoid St Albans market days

St Albans holds its street market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, so another weekday morning keeps the Market Place and the Clock Tower clearer of crowds.

03

Watch for cattle

Croxley Common Moor has cattle grazing from around April, and English Longhorns graze Oughtonhead Common in Hitchin, so we plan a route that keeps a fence between you and the herd.

04

Plan where to change

Woods and commons have few places to change, so arrive in the first outfit and make the second change at the car or at the studio.

Engagement shoot settings in Hertfordshire

These settings and landmarks come from council, trust and heritage sources, and each one could anchor an engagement or pre-wedding shoot.

  • The Dell and River Colne, Oxhey Park: Oxhey Park is a County Wildlife Site where the River Colne is edged with reed beds and bulrushes and an area called The Dell, towards Bushey Arches, holds broadleaved woodland; kingfishers and grey wagtails are among its birds. 1
  • Oxhey Woods Local Nature Reserve: Oxhey Woods, managed by Three Rivers District Council, is the district's largest Local Nature Reserve at nearly 100 hectares of mainly ancient semi-natural woodland, with dogs welcome and a free car park at the junction of Prestwick Road and Oxhey Drive. 2
  • Bushey Rose Garden: Bushey Rose Garden was created in 1913 by the garden designer Thomas Mawson with Sir Hubert von Herkomer, is a 0.5 ha Grade II registered historic garden with a sunken garden, rose walk, pergola and cloisters, was restored and reopened in July 2010, and welcomes dogs. 3
  • Batchworth Lock: Batchworth Lock (Lock 81) on the Grand Union Canal is home to the Rickmansworth Waterways Trust canal centre and its heritage working boat Roger, with boat trips between Batchworth and Stockers Locks. 4
  • Croxleyhall Woods: Croxleyhall Woods, reached from All Saints Lane or Harvey Road (WD3 3BS), is over 15 hectares of ancient semi-natural woodland with two circular walks of just under 2 km and bluebells in spring. 5

Good to know

Engagement and couples shoots in Hertfordshire: questions answered

Yes, if they are close together. Batchworth Lock and the Aquadrome sit side by side at Rickmansworth, and Verulamium Park is a short walk from the Market Place in St Albans. Two places further apart, such as Hertford and Berkhamsted, are better as one, so the time goes on photographs rather than driving.

Many parks and commons are open to walk in, but some set their own terms. Shenley Park Trust allows professional wedding and family photographs for a fee paid in advance, and Hertsmere Borough Council lets people use a small area of lawn in Bushey Rose Garden for wedding photographs by prior agreement. We check the rules for your chosen place before the day.

Yes, and that is a good reason to book the shoot early. You receive edited images suitable for print and screen, so you can use them on cards, a wedding website, a welcome sign or a frame on the guest book table.

It is an optional extra that can be added to any wedding booking, alongside a second photographer or a hand-finished album. It is also available on its own if you simply want photographs of the two of you. Ask by phone or WhatsApp for the price of an engagement shoot on its own.

We watch the forecast together in the days before. Light drizzle can actually help under trees or by the canal, but heavy rain means moving the date or switching to the Northwood studio, which is 3.6 miles from Rickmansworth and 3.8 from Watford.

You can, and wearing the outfits planned for the mehndi or reception is a good test of how they move. Heavy clothes and jewellery need a setting with firm ground and a short walk, so we choose a spot with easy parking or use the studio for that part of the session.

Anywhere in the county. Rickmansworth, Bushey and Watford are under four miles from the studio, St Albans is 10.9 and Hitchin 24.6. Each quote sets out the travel from Northwood in writing before you confirm.

Your photographer is Kaushik Bathia, a fellow of both the BIPP and the MPA with five European Kodak Gold Awards, working from the studio he opened in Northwood in 2001.
