What they genuinely alter is the group photography. Eight combinations is manageable; twenty-two swallows an afternoon, and it swallows precisely the stretch when everybody still looks fresh, nobody has started drinking and outdoor light still has some quality left in it.
Speeches get lit by whatever hangs over the top table, which in a country room usually means one warm source behind whoever is standing. So we photograph the listeners instead: their faces catch it from the front. The first dance is our single exception all evening: we bring stands in, set wide of the floor, since skin lit by phone screens renders badly, which editing cannot undo. Every other hour of the night belongs to the room's own fittings.
