St Michael's Manor is a hotel in the oldest part of St Albans, beside the Roman remains at Verulamium, with five acres of private gardens and a lake behind it. It publishes a clean, specific licence: licensed for civil ceremonies for up to 140 guests, with 30 boutique bedrooms for an exclusive-use weekend.
It is also the venue in this set where we would raise catering first rather than last. The hotel does not publish a caterer policy either way, while third-party reviews state plainly that external catering is not allowed, citing its two AA Rosettes. If that is right, it shapes what kind of Asian wedding is possible here — and it is the one thing to settle before falling for the lake.
We are a wedding photography studio in Northwood, HA6, established 2001 and rated 4.8 out of 5 from 500+ Google reviews. We photograph weddings of every tradition, Asian ceremonies among them, and we cover this venue gladly. Below is what the venue publishes, and what it does not.

The catering question that decides this venue
The licence is stated cleanly, which is more than most manage: licensed for civil ceremonies for up to 140 guests. What the hotel does not publish is which rooms carry that licence, so if a particular room matters — and with a lake behind the building, it will — that needs confirming.
Catering is the decisive question and the hotel is silent on it. Its own wedding pages talk about bespoke proposals and direct couples to download a brochure or book a showcase, without stating a policy on outside caterers. Third-party reviews are not silent: they say external catering is not allowed, and attribute that to the hotel's two AA Rosettes and its own kitchen reputation. We cannot verify that from the hotel itself, so we report both positions rather than pick one.
If external catering is genuinely not permitted, this is a venue for a civil ceremony and a reception with hotel catering rather than for a full Hindu, Sikh or Muslim wedding with its own kitchen. That is not a criticism of the hotel — it is simply the fact that decides whether it belongs on your shortlist. Ask, and ask specifically about a vegetarian kitchen and halal provision if either matters.
A private lake, five acres, and a 140 ceiling
- The lake and five acres of gardens are the reason to shoot here. They sit behind the hotel, away from Fishpool Street, so portraits are private without leaving the grounds.
- 140 is the ceiling on the licence, so this is a smaller wedding by Asian standards. The upside is that the whole group fits in one frame by the water.
- Which rooms are licensed is not published. If you want the ceremony facing the garden, confirm the room before the timeline is fixed.
- Fishpool Street is a narrow historic street. Arrival pictures work, but a large car or a baraat needs the hotel's guidance on where it can actually stop.
- Verulamium Park and the Roman wall are a short walk away and give a completely different backdrop if there is a gap in the schedule. Agree the walking time first.
- 30 bedrooms on site mean preparation can happen at the venue. Ask which rooms take morning light.
A hotel on Fishpool Street, beside Roman Verulamium
The hotel stands on Fishpool Street, the old road running down from St Albans towards the site of Roman Verulamium, in what is now the most complete historic street in the city. Behind it lie five acres of private gardens and a lake, which is what separates it from other hotels of its size. Inside there are 30 boutique bedrooms, and the hotel offers itself for exclusive use so that a wedding party has the building to itself. The hotel does not publish a listing status, a build date or an architect on its wedding pages, so we do not assert one.
St Albans AL3, and a narrow historic street
Fishpool Street, St Albans AL3 4RY. St Albans City station is the main rail approach from London, and the M25 and M1 are both close. Parking is referred to in reviews rather than published as a policy, so confirm the space count if a large group is arriving by car — Fishpool Street itself is narrow and historic, and is not the place to discover a parking problem on the morning. From our Northwood HA6 studio it is a straightforward run up the A405.
