Berkhamsted Castle, the ruined Norman motte and bailey, is the strongest backdrop in the centre and is best used when the sun is low enough to model the earthworks. For something larger, the Ashridge Estate and Berkhamsted Common provide woodland and open commons. Ashridge House is the grandest venue here, with Berkhamsted Town Hall and The Gatsby offering character interiors. Trains run to London Euston on the West Coast Main Line, and Northchurch, Potten End and Bourne End sit close by for morning preparations.
