For a large Asian wedding that settles one of the biggest questions before you start.

What The Grove allows, and what it does not say

What The Grove publishes:

On the sunken garden in the Formal Gardens: "Both civil and religious ceremonies can be formed here" (sic).
On catering: "We also partner with carefully selected kosher caterers and specialist Asian caterer, Madhu's for large events including Indian weddings, and other celebrations."

What it does not publish. Put these to the venue and get the answer in writing:

Is open flame permitted for a havan or agni? No statement either way.
How is a baraat handled: which entrance, what route, what time?
May you bring a caterer other than the named partners?
What is the policy on alcohol, corkage and dry hire?
Is a mandap allowed, and where? Madhu's own listing shows "Civil | Mandap | Hotel | Parking", but that is Madhu's wording. The Grove publishes no mandap statement.
Any photography or drone restrictions? None published, which is not the same as none.
How many parking spaces, and is parking free for guests who are not staying?
If the sunken garden is used, what is the wet-weather alternative, and what guest number is it licensed for?

None of that is a criticism of the venue. Most estates publish less than couples need. It is simply the list you should walk in with.

Photography planning notes for The Grove

Planning notes we would work through with you:

Amber has floor-to-ceiling French windows and the Cedar Suite floor-to-ceiling glass over the Formal Gardens. Glass that size gives strong daylight near the windows that drops off fast further in. Check the room at the hour your ceremony starts, not the hour you view it.
The sunken garden is the space named for ceremonies. Sunken ground tightens sightlines, so agree in advance where we can stand.
Cinnamon links straight into Amber and can be a green room: a short walk for getting-ready coverage and family groups.
Ivory has a private entrance and terrace, useful for keeping your arrivals clear of another event.
The estate is 300 acres and the Walled Garden alone is 13,048 m². Portrait spots can sit far from your reception room. Build the walk into the timeline or arrange transport.
The Mansion is Grade II* listed and the venue states some areas are not fully accessible. If an older relative must be in a group shot, pick a level-entry spot.
The Cedar Suite and Ivory each have a private terrace. Both give a level-entry outdoor spot for group photographs a few steps from the room, which matters when the group includes grandparents.
The Potting Shed sits in the Walled Garden and can take an outdoor marquee, so an outdoor element can be planned there rather than on the main lawns.
Drop-off is available at every entrance, so a car arrival can be covered close to the door. Valet parking is offered, so agree who is holding the car keys before the first vehicle pulls up.

The building

The Mansion is Grade II* listed and was the seat of the Earls of Clarendon. It now holds 214 bedrooms and 16 event spaces on a 300-acre estate, with Formal Gardens, a 13,048 m² Walled Garden containing an outdoor pool, beach, kitchen garden, tennis courts and topiary, woodland trails created with The Wildlife Trust, and an 18-hole championship golf course. It hosted the 2009 G20 London summit, the 2013 Bilderberg conference and the 2019 NATO Leaders' Meeting; the golf course held the 2006 WGC-American Express Championship, won by Tiger Woods, and the 2016 British Masters. The Cedar Suite is named after the 200-year-old cedar trees outside it.

The Grove, Chandler's Cross, Hertfordshire WD3 4TG. The sat-nav postcode is different: WD17 3NL. Put both on the invitation. Watford Junction is the nearest station, a five-minute drive according to the venue, with fast trains to London Euston; the estate is 18 miles from central London. Delegate packages list "complimentary car parking", and there is accessible parking, drop-off at all entrances and optional valet parking. The total space count is not published, nor is whether parking is free for every non-resident guest. Ask.

How much does a wedding venue cost in London?

There is no single figure. Pricing is per head and moves with season and inclusions. The Grove's August 2023 brochure listed Pure Simplicity from £179pp October to March and £205pp April to September, Pure Elegance £224 and £239, Pure Indulgence £244 and £259, all including VAT. That brochure is from 2023 and has likely been superseded, so ask for current rates.

What are the best wedding venues in London?

For an Asian wedding, "best" comes down to three answers: can it hold your numbers, will it allow your ceremony, can it feed the room. The Grove sits in Hertfordshire, 18 miles from central London, and answers two of them plainly: Amber takes up to 450, and Madhu's is its named specialist Asian caterer. The ceremony question you still have to ask, because open flame is not covered anywhere it publishes.

Is 10k enough for a wedding in the UK?

For a small wedding, yes. At an estate of this level it does not stretch. On the lowest rate in the August 2023 brochure, £179pp for October to March, £10,000 covers roughly 55 people on the package alone, before flowers, clothes, transport, decor or photography. If you are planning for hundreds, build the budget up from a current per-head quote.

Where is the cheapest place to get married in London?

A register office ceremony is the cheapest route, and fees are set locally, so check your own borough rather than a general figure. After that the biggest lever is timing. On every package in The Grove's August 2023 brochure the October to March rate was lower than April to September, by £15 to £26 per person. Those figures are likely superseded.
