For Maple Cross
We agree a starting point and a fallback, then meet you there. The opening stretch is spent walking and talking with the camera down, because expressions loosen once the equipment has stopped being the subject.
Afterwards you get a private gallery of finished pictures, colour first, with mono alternatives where a frame earns one. Each file arrives twice, once large enough to print and once small enough to upload. Retouching takes out what was temporary that week and leaves the face alone.

What we offer
Portrait sittings in Maple Cross, on the reserve paths, or in the Northwood room when the sky closes in.
Individuals, couples and small groups, photographed at a rate that leaves room for the expression to arrive.
Colour and mono files, sized to print and to upload, delivered in a private online gallery.
Local and experienced
Direction is given in small pieces, one instruction at a time, because a list of five adjustments at once is how a sitter ends up looking like a shop mannequin. Small groups are built from the back row forward, heights staggered rather than lined up, so nobody is hidden and every face receives the same quality of light.
Prints, frames, canvases and hand-finished albums are all available, so your portraits need not stay on a screen. Short sittings are perfectly reasonable: one strong frame for a profile picture, or a longer visit covering several changes of clothes and a full wall portrait.

Good to know
We do, but with a gentle touch. Passing distractions such as a stray hair or a small blemish are eased away, yet your skin, lines and character stay exactly as they are. We aim for a flattering, true-to-life portrait, never a heavily edited or artificial one. We cover Maple Cross and nearby Rickmansworth, West Hyde and Chorleywood.
The studio is The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6. For a Maple Cross portrait you do not have to choose between it and outdoors at the point of booking: we hold outdoor ground as the first plan and keep the studio open for the same slot, then decide on the morning according to the sky. If you would rather begin indoors and finish outside, both fit in one booking.
Yes. Portfolio work is a speciality, and plenty of performers from Maple Cross come to us for it. We shape a varied set of lighting styles and looks so your book has genuine range, and we guide you through expressions and poses with casting requirements always in mind.
Absolutely. Individual portraits are some of our most rewarding sittings. The whole session is about you alone, shaped with gentle, warm direction so you look relaxed and flattering. Whether for a personal-branding profile, a thoughtful gift or purely for yourself, we make sure the time truly counts. Outdoors in Maple Cross we would head for Maple Lodge Nature Reserve in the Colne Valley Regional Park.
Yes, and most of it is handled by where we stand rather than by anything you do. Being watched is what stiffens people, so we avoid the pavement outside your own front door, where neighbours pass, and use the quieter paths at Maple Lodge Nature Reserve or a closed room at Northwood. The opening minutes are deliberately wasted: walking, talking, nothing asked of you.
Serving Maple Cross
Clients come to us from all over Hertfordshire, including Maple Cross (WD3). It sits close to Mill End and Sarratt, which we cover too. We can photograph at the studio or on location in Maple Cross, whichever suits you best.
A small Hertfordshire village on the western fringe of Rickmansworth in the Three Rivers district, made up largely of post-war housing. Sits beside junction 17 of the M25 motorway on the A412 Denham Way. When a session suits an outdoor setting, Maple Lodge Nature Reserve in the Colne Valley Regional Park is a favourite near Maple Cross, close to The Cross Inn.

Maple Cross gives a portrait two backgrounds and they behave in opposite ways. Maple Lodge Nature Reserve, part of the Colne Valley Regional Park, is ground managed for wildlife, which means the planting is allowed to stand close to the paths, so anyone on a path has vegetation only a few steps behind them. That is a problem and an opening at once. A background that near renders as busy detail unless the lens does the separating, so the sitting is made from further along the path with a longer focal length rather than by stepping in. The other background is the village itself, largely post-war housing, and there the brick is the thing to think about. Red brick in low sun works as a warm reflector, and a face standing beside a lit wall picks up that colour on its shaded side. In October it flatters. In a print it can read as a fault. Turn the wall behind the shoulder instead of beside the cheek and the same brick becomes an even, quiet backdrop with no period detail to argue with the face. Clothing follows from that. Brick occupies the terracotta and mid-brown range, so anything in that family merges into it, while navy, forest green, charcoal and off-white all hold their edge. On the reserve the reverse applies: green surrounds everything, and it is the warmer colours that lift a person away from it.
