For Maple Cross

Natural family portraits in Maple Cross

You get a rough plan before the day: where we meet, what to bring for the youngest, and who needs to be there for which frames. Sessions are kept short on purpose, since a small child gives what they have once.

Anyone who cannot stand for long is seated for their frames rather than asked to wait through them. Frames come in short runs with a pause between each one, which is roughly how small children operate anyway. Finished pictures arrive in a private online gallery, sized both for a wall print and for a phone.

Why families in Maple Cross choose us

We capture the way your family really is together, not a stiff, formal version of it. Groups larger than eight are arranged in a shallow arc rather than a line, keeping every face the same distance from the lens and evenly lit.

We photograph the whole family together, then smaller groups and each child on their own, so every combination is covered. Family groups from three to around twenty-five can be photographed, and anything larger is worth discussing beforehand so the arrangement is planned rather than improvised.

Good to know

Family Photographer in Maple Cross, FAQs

Both, and the choice usually comes down to the youngest child and the forecast. Outdoors in Maple Cross means your own garden, the level pavements of the street, or Maple Lodge Nature Reserve itself once the children are old enough to stay to a marked route. The Northwood studio answers for newborns, for a wet week, and for a group big enough that somewhere warm to wait matters more than scenery.

Of course you can. We love including a well-behaved family pet, and many Maple Cross sessions feature the household dog. A quick heads-up in advance helps us plan the shots properly and keep everybody, on two legs or four, happy and settled throughout.

Absolutely you can. Family photography is about everyone together, so parents are firmly part of every Maple Cross session. We photograph the full family first, then smaller groupings and each child on their own, so you leave with cuddles, connection and every combination beautifully captured.

Just let us know as soon as you can. With babies and toddlers, illness and off days happen, and we would always rather move a session than photograph an unhappy child. We will find a new date that works for your family. Maple Cross and neighbouring Rickmansworth, West Hyde and Chorleywood are all covered.

Because the plan is particular to Maple Cross rather than generic. For under-fives we work at your own address, using the garden and the level pavements outside, so a pushchair, a changing bag and anyone who cannot stand for long all stay within reach of the door. For older children we use the reserve paths late in the day. If the weather goes, the Northwood studio takes the same booking.

Clients come to us from all over Hertfordshire, including Maple Cross (WD3). It sits close to Mill End and Sarratt, which we cover too. We can photograph at the studio or on location in Maple Cross, whichever suits you best.

A small Hertfordshire village on the western fringe of Rickmansworth in the Three Rivers district, made up largely of post-war housing. Sits beside junction 17 of the M25 motorway on the A412 Denham Way. For on-location sessions we often head to spots such as Maple Lodge Nature Reserve in the Colne Valley Regional Park, close to the well-known The Cross Inn.

The age of the youngest person coming decides everything else about a family session here. Under-fives give their best attention in the opening few minutes and spend the rest of the session negotiating, which is why the picture everyone actually wants, the whole group, all looking, nobody blinking, gets made first rather than saved as the finale. Once that frame exists the session can loosen into walking, carrying and lifting, and those tend to be the frames that end up on a wall. Maple Lodge Nature Reserve suits the youngest groups less well than its name suggests. A reserve is managed for the creatures living in it, which means quiet, staying to the marked route, and not going where a three year old wants to go, and an hour spent asking a small child to be quiet is an hour spent photographing the ground. Older children and adult groups get far more out of it. For toddlers the better ground is the village: pavements, a driveway, a garden, level footing for a grandparent, and somewhere to leave the car within sight of everyone. Light on an estate of post-war houses comes from open sky rather than filtered shade, so the useful hours are the two either side of the ends of the day, when the sun travels along the street rather than down onto it. Between those, contrast on faces is at its least forgiving and a room with controlled light beats any garden.
