A young child gives roughly half an hour of honest attention and then it is spent, so the pictures that matter get taken at the front of a session and everything afterwards counts as a bonus. Nobody is asked to arrange their face.
Each household in the party ends up with the same finished gallery, which saves the usual fortnight of forwarding pictures around, and grandparents get files they can take to a print shop without needing to ask anybody for help.

What we offer
Family sessions in Verulamium Park, worked on one agreed spot rather than a long march around it.
Sodden week or fading afternoon, the same booking moves indoors to Northwood with no loss of plan.
Children photographed at their own height, in short bursts, with the important frames taken first.
Local and experienced
Twins take longer than two babies photographed separately would, and the session is planned that way from the start rather than discovered halfway through it. Naming what you actually want in advance helps enormously, whether that is one wall portrait, a set of prints for grandparents, or simply a record of this exact year.
Maternity sessions celebrate this stage with calm, flattering portraits, in the studio or outdoors. A cake smash session captures the anticipation, the mess and the delight, a wonderful way to mark a first birthday.

Good to know
They do not need to. We never expect toddlers to sit still and smile on command, so instead we turn the session into play and photograph the genuine moments. Some of our favourite images come from children who are busy being themselves. We cover St Albans and nearby Redbourn, Wheathampstead and Sandridge.
Yes. With a baby a few weeks old we work at your address in St Albans, because the session has to fit around feeds, not around us. Warmth matters more than daylight at that age, so we carry light in and you keep the heating up. Allow a couple of hours, most of which is spent waiting for a settled baby.
Yes. It is a room at The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6, with floor space a toddler can sit on, enough length for a short run, and nothing at knee height worth breaking. It is heated, which is the real argument for it in January, when the park ground near the lakes is soft and nobody wants photographing inside a coat.
Yes. Send the headcount and rough ages when you get in touch; both change the lens and the ground we pick. Outdoors in St Albans we need level standing wide enough to hold everybody without a back row on a slope. Everyone together comes first, while the smallest child is still interested, then we work down through the smaller combinations.
Ideally within the first fortnight, when newborns are sleepiest and easiest to settle. Many St Albans parents contact us during pregnancy, which we love, because we can then pencil in a date around when baby is due and be prepared for the big day.
Serving St Albans
St Albans is well within our travel area. It sits close to Radlett and Abbots Langley, which we cover too. We cover St Albans and the wider Hertfordshire area for family photography, on location or in the studio, with no local travel charge.
St Albans is a historic cathedral city built beside the Roman city of Verulamium, and it holds the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain. St Albans City station sits on the Thameslink Midland Main Line with fast services to London St Pancras, and the M25 and M1 are close by. For relaxed outdoor photographs around St Albans, we like Verulamium Park, and St Albans Cathedral is a well-known local backdrop.

Over 100 acres sounds like an advantage for a family session, and it is closer to a trap. A three year old and a grandparent both arrive with a fixed budget of walking and a fixed budget of patience, and Verulamium Park is easily big enough to spend both before a single picture has been taken. So we agree one pitch, work it properly, and treat the scale of the place as something to ignore. A pram settles the same argument from the other direction: made-up path is fine, mown grass is not, and the ground gets chosen by the wheels rather than by the view. Water is the second planning point, and not for the reason people assume. To a child under about four a lake is a destination, and a sitting held beside one becomes a sequence of frames of the back of a head walking away. So the water goes behind the camera, and it gets held back as the reward they are allowed to go and inspect once we have finished, which buys roughly fifteen minutes of honest attention that would otherwise have leaked away. Low ground near the lakes drains slowly, which is worth a look at the forecast for the week before, not just the day. After a wet spell, or when the afternoon light has run out, the sitting happens in the Northwood room instead: dry floor, fixed temperature, and a small child who is warm will last about twice as long as one who is cold.

How it works
For St Albans we work on location. That is usually the better answer for weddings, events, branding and team photography, since we arrive at your venue or office with everything needed. You are welcome at the studio in Northwood if you would rather.
Your photographer is Kaushik Bathia, a fellow of both the BIPP and the MPA with five European Gold awards, working from the studio he opened in Northwood in 2001.
