St Albans and nearby
A location sitting takes ninety minutes or thereabouts, rather less indoors. Anything needing daylight gets done first and anything that does not is held back, so one grey half hour cannot spoil a whole booking. You look at frames on the camera screen as they happen, which means no surprise waiting for you at the end.
The finished work reaches you as a private online gallery: full resolution for printing, plus a smaller set for posting. Retouching takes out what was temporary on the day and leaves the rest alone.

What we offer
Individual portraits made outdoors in St Albans or in the steady, controlled light of the Northwood studio.
Clothing and background tone agreed in advance, so the two work together instead of quietly cancelling each other out.
Edited images supplied at print size, plus a smaller set sized for a profile or a post.
Local and experienced
Backdrops and lighting are changed through the session, giving you a mix of clean studio looks and softer, moodier frames. Nervous sitters do better facing away from any mirror. Seeing yourself mid pose makes you self conscious, so the review happens after a run of frames rather than during it.
Graduation portraits can include the gown alone, the gown with family, and one frame without it, because the person underneath the robes is worth photographing too. A typical session includes a range of looks, with changes of backdrop, lighting and, if you wish, outfit.

Good to know
Yes. Portfolio work is a speciality, and plenty of performers from St Albans come to us for it. We shape a varied set of lighting styles and looks so your book has genuine range, and we guide you through expressions and poses with casting requirements always in mind.
Yes. We photograph portraits of every age, and are patient and gentle with younger sitters, shaping the pace of the session around them. Whether it is a single child, a couple portrait or a group, we keep the mood light so the results feel natural and warm. This applies across St Albans and Redbourn, Wheathampstead and Sandridge.
Yes, regularly. Sittings in St Albans happen either outdoors or in the Northwood studio, and the month usually decides which. Between November and February low sun works sideways across open grass for the whole afternoon, which is the kindest light of the year. In midsummer we go early or wait for the last hour instead. Tell us roughly when you want it and we will propose the time of day.
That depends on the kind of session you want and what you choose afterwards, whether digital files only or prints, frames, canvases and albums. Let us know what you have in mind, from a personal-branding set to a graduation portrait, and we will prepare a clear quote for you. For outdoor photographs in St Albans we would suggest Verulamium Park, over 100 acres of parkland with lakes beside the cathedral.
We do, and they are a joy to make. Graduation marks real hard work, so we photograph it with warmth, in cap and gown if you wish. Sit for the portraits alone or with proud family, and choose prints, frames or an album to keep the day alive. St Albans is easy to reach: St Albans City station sits on the Thameslink Midland Main Line with fast services to London St Pancras, and the M25 and M1 are close by.

St Albans is well within our travel area. It sits close to Radlett and Abbots Langley, which we cover too. We cover St Albans and the wider Hertfordshire area for portrait photography, on location or in the studio, with no local travel charge.
St Albans is a historic cathedral city built beside the Roman city of Verulamium, and it holds the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain. St Albans City station sits on the Thameslink Midland Main Line with fast services to London St Pancras, and the M25 and M1 are close by. When a session suits an outdoor setting, Verulamium Park is a favourite near St Albans, close to St Albans Cathedral.

The same studio, experience and personal care apply to every service we offer in St Albans. Explore the rest: We also cover portrait photography across Hertfordshire, including Chorleywood, Abbots Langley, Maple Cross, Carpenders Park, Hemel Hempstead and Bushey.
St Albans offers a sitting two backgrounds that ask for opposite clothing, and settling which one you want is most of the preparation. The cathedral tower was built with Roman brick lifted out of Verulamium, and brick of that age sits in a warm red-brown band containing no true black and no true white. Rust, camel and tan sink into it and stop reading as clothes at all; a cool grey, a deep blue or an unbleached white keeps its edge. Verulamium Park inverts the rule, because over 100 acres of grass puts one colour on every side of the frame: mid greens on a sitter go quiet, and a black coat on sunlit grass turns into a flat shape with a face floating above it. Season decides the hours before the forecast gets a vote. The park is largely open, so in June and July the sun arrives from almost directly overhead, lighting the crown of the head and starving the eyes, and a sitting then belongs early or in the last hour. From November the sun stays low and crosses the grass sideways for an entire afternoon, which is the easiest light of the year here and the reason a cold booking is worth the inconvenience. One more consequence follows from open ground on that scale: wind gets an unbroken run at it. Hair blown across a face cannot be repaired afterwards, so a hair tie in a pocket does more good than a spare top, and on a genuinely blowing day we put a tree line at our backs and work with it.

How it works
For St Albans we work on location. That is usually the better answer for weddings, events, branding and team photography, since we arrive at your venue or office with everything needed. You are welcome at the studio in Northwood if you would rather.
Your photographer is Kaushik Bathia, a fellow of both the BIPP and the MPA with five European Gold awards, working from the studio he opened in Northwood in 2001.
