We meet at the park, walk for a few minutes before the camera is out of the bag, and put the most demanding frames first while concentration is fresh. You get a look at the screen early on, so anything you dislike about a crop or a stance is dealt with while we are still standing in it.
Everything usable is edited, not a shortlist, and the set arrives in colour with black and white versions where a frame earns one. Retouching stays limited to what would not be there next week.

Yes. Groups work best at Aldenham Country Park, where the open grassland gives room to build rows without the back of the group disappearing behind the front of it. Tell us the number and the ages when you book. Above about a dozen we start on level ground near the path, get everyone assembled, then break into smaller combinations while the group is still gathered.
Budget two hours in Radlett, of which roughly an hour is photography. The rest goes on the walk between the lakeside and the open grassland at Aldenham, which is where the two usable backgrounds sit, and on waiting out a bright spell if the sky is doing something unhelpful. A sitting at the Northwood studio is shorter, since nothing there depends on the weather.
Turnaround is quick. Once your sitting in Radlett or Northwood is done, we edit the pictures and send a gallery for you to choose from. Prints, frames, canvases or albums ordered from it follow soon after.
Because the plan is specific before you arrive. In Radlett we start at the lake at Aldenham, where open sky above and water below light the face from two directions at once, and move onto the grassland only once the light has dropped far enough to come in sideways. In midsummer that means a late slot instead of a midday one, and we say so when the slot is picked.
Outdoors in Radlett it is daylight only, shaped by where we stand: the lake as a soft source overhead, the grassland edge when a harder look is wanted. At Northwood there are plain backdrops in grey, white and black, lit with studio heads, and a separate light goes on the background so it stays even behind the head. Both routes look like the same photographer.

Aldenham Country Park hands a Radlett sitting two grounds in a single walk, and picking between them is really a decision about how much sky is landing on the face. Over the lake there is nothing overhead at all, so the whole sky acts as the source, and on a bright still day it arrives from above far more than from the side. It hollows the sockets and leaves a hard edge under the nose, which is why the hour either side of noon in June is the one slot we move rather than argue with. Cloud changes that same spot completely: an overcast sky is a soft source the size of the horizon, and the water beneath adds a weaker second one from below that lifts the jaw. Open grassland behaves in the opposite way. Nothing under it returns light, grass takes it instead, so faces sit heavier there and the sensible hour is late, when the sun is low enough to skim across a face rather than down it. Season reorders which ground wins. From late spring the grass reads strongly green and pushes green into pale skin and into anything white being worn, so warm neutrals, mid tones and denim survive better than a crisp shirt. In winter the grass goes flat and fawn, the lake takes the colour of the sky, and a dark coat then reads as shape against a pale field instead of vanishing into it. That reversal is worth planning around, because January and July want opposite clothing at the same location.

Portrait sittings there are by appointment, and passport and ID photos, prints, frames, restoration and digitising are done on the premises. Portrait appointments at the studio are available from 10:30 to 18:00 Monday to Saturday and from 13:00 to 18:00 on Sunday, useful when the Radlett light will not cooperate.
