A gurdwara belongs to an institution, not to a wedding, and photography formed no part of the design brief. People sit on the floor, the congregation fills it, you stand where you are put and you stay there. Accepting that early is an advantage, since the whole morning then gets settled beforehand instead of argued over on the day. Walk the empty hall, work out which two vantage points hold both faces, and commit.

Evening is the opposite job. A clubhouse room belongs to you for the night, so lighting turns from condition into choice: where dancing sits, which wall the speeches face, whether warm bar spill is worth leaving alone. The four laavan take a couple along one short route four times, so any difference between the frames has to be manufactured by the photographer. Change height on one pass, change side on the next, change what stands behind them on the third. Palla is the detail worth staying near: cloth travelling hand to hand carries the morning's whole meaning, and because it is small it asks for reach rather than a step forward.

Earlier, milni is outdoors and standing, under a Hertfordshire sky nobody booked, the rare occasion on which two families are photographed at equal height. Langar drops everybody to the floor once more, where plates and hands say more than faces. Doli is where the seam falls: one family's morning ends and another's evening begins between the opening and the shutting of a car door. Nothing about that handover is scheduled, so it gets watched for rather than waited on.

Yes, with reach and no flash whatsoever. The musicians, the couple, the faces of relatives listening rather than performing. A room like that carries its own weight, so the job is to record it without adding anything of our own.

Are you a candid photographer or do you pose people?+

Mostly candid, on purpose. The exception is the formal groups, which have to be run firmly or they eat the afternoon. Everything else improves the moment people stop noticing a camera at all, so we stay small and quiet.

How does the album design process work?+

A first sequence comes from us, drawn from the whole delivered set. You mark what to drop and what to enlarge, and it goes round twice more. Chronological order holds unless a particular spread argues better for itself.

How do you photograph the Anand Karaj ceremony?+

From a single agreed position, negotiated beforehand and not claimed on the morning, then held throughout. Reach, available light, no movement while the hymns are being sung. Coverage loosens the moment the ceremony has closed.

How do you organise the family group photographs?+

A written list, names on it rather than relations, plus one relative who knows everybody and can fetch them. Twenty groupings is ordinary. Run properly each costs roughly a minute, and the queue clears before drinks go warm.
