Roman roads ran through this Mimram valley village long before the East Coast Main Line arrived, and Welwyn North station now brings a sangat in from either direction. An anand karaj at the family gurdwara, with the reception at Tewinbury or Brocket Hall, would be photographed with heads covered and shoes off, the Guru Granth Sahib never treated as scenery. Kirtan from the ragis, the ardas and the four laavan are recorded quietly from the edge. The milni before the ceremony, the kalire at home that morning and the doli at the end give the day its most unguarded frames.

For three hours or so your eye line, and ours, is roughly a metre above the carpet. Everybody sits down there, so most of the lenses a photographer reaches for by habit become useless, and we spend the ceremony on our knees. There is a direction nobody in that hall turns their back on, and that single fact settles our standing position long before we walk in. We plan around it rather than negotiate about it.
A Sikh day around Welwyn may well be spent in two buildings. Mornings belong to a hall we may not light at all, under fixed congregational lighting intended for reading, not for photographs, with no flash allowed and no say over its colour temperature at all. The evening, at Brocket Hall, Tewinbury or wherever the reception lands, is ours to light. Two different jobs, and lights are worth carrying for one of them only.

The laavan, the milni and the doli
The four laavan look repetitive to anybody watching from behind. They are not. Every round returns to where it began, so the turn and the settling afterwards matter more than the walking does. Sangat presses in on both sides, leaving the central aisle as the only clean line of sight in the building. Much of the story sits in the palla rather than in faces, and a length of cloth reads clearly at a distance where an expression would not.
Milni happens outside, quickly, in whatever flat daylight the sky has provided that morning, and the embraces come in an order nobody announces beforehand. Langar puts everybody back down at floor level in rows, so the angle is low again and the interest is in hands. Doli is the least controllable moment there is, and the one least appropriate to direct, so we stand back, keep quiet and let the car door close on its own.
