An anand karaj takes less time than most couples expect, and nothing within it gets staged for a camera. We work from the floor because everybody else is on the floor, with the light already present in the room and a focal length that leaves the aisle empty. Movement between positions happens in the gaps, not during the singing. One line is never crossed for a picture, and that is standing anywhere which ends up obscuring the Guru Granth Sahib.

The palla ties the couple into a single shape, so from that point framing them apart stops working. Four circuits follow, each putting them in the same place doing the same thing, which means we move rather than hope for variety. During the ardas the hall stands and nobody shifts; it is the quietest the room gets all day, so we stop shifting too. Milni before it, langar after: that is where the loose unwatched pictures come from.
