An anand karaj takes less time than most couples expect, and nothing within it gets staged for a camera. We work from the floor because everybody else is on the floor, with the light already present in the room and a focal length that leaves the aisle empty. Movement between positions happens in the gaps, not during the singing. One line is never crossed for a picture, and that is standing anywhere which ends up obscuring the Guru Granth Sahib.
The palla ties the couple into a single shape, so from that point framing them apart stops working. Four circuits follow, each putting them in the same place doing the same thing, which means we move rather than hope for variety. During the ardas the hall stands and nobody shifts; it is the quietest the room gets all day, so we stop shifting too. Milni before it, langar after: that is where the loose unwatched pictures come from.

Somebody else's building gets treated as somebody else's building. Sevadars are asked first, whatever instruction comes back is followed exactly, and no case, stand or bag ends up where it would be in anyone's path. A hall run by volunteers owes a photographer nothing, and forgetting that is how suppliers end up being asked to leave.

Hertford Castle takes up to 60 for a ceremony and seated reception, and its grounds, with the Edward IV gatehouse, the Norman motte beside the River Lea and the moat garden, would let us photograph the newlyweds on the way from the gurdwara to a larger evening venue. Hertford Register Office at County Hall on Pegs Lane has an Oak Room for up to 50 guests, and the step-free paved area of the adjacent Millennium Garden is there for photographs straight after the civil ceremony.
