Then we sit down. Seated, off to one side, our only remaining variables are focal length and timing, so we carry long glass and leave the flash and the monopod in the car. Everything about our position in that hall is dictated by where they have installed the Guru Granth Sahib.

Four laavan means one circuit walked four times, and a stationary photographer delivers four almost identical files. Changing side and focal length between them makes the set a progression instead. The palla alters what a frame contains rather than how it is lit, which earns a wider lens for those seconds. Langar we photograph as the meal it is: hands, plates, queues, nobody asked to look up. The doli finishes the day outdoors, under whatever the sky has left.

Hatfield Park hosts weddings in spaces including the Old Palace and its Knot Garden, with free parking on site, and Camfield Place at Wildhill has a Main Lawn for up to 200, so a reception and portraits could happen in one place after the gurdwara. Every photographer carries paired bodies, a second lens spanning the same focal range, and dual card slots recording simultaneously. Batteries go spare rather than counted. Kit failure ought to cost a few seconds and never the ceremony.
