Serving Ware
From the gurdwara floor to the evening reception
A Sikh morning happens at floor level. Seated, the camera sits at knee height for two hours, and getting to your feet mid-ceremony to fix a bad angle is not available; the lens gets decided in advance or not at all. In compensation, congregational halls run on one unchanging set of lamps. Colour and brightness stay put from the first hour to the last, so exposure stops being interesting and where you sit becomes the entire question.
Evening moves to another building and another light source, ours this time. A gap opens between the two, and couple portraits belong inside it: daylight, no queue, nobody waiting to be photographed next. Ware offers the riverside gazebos, and Ware Priory has grounds beside the water inside that same window, close enough that neither gets dropped for the other. Sehra bandi, milni and the four laavan
Milni puts both sides on their feet and mixed together, instead of seated in two blocks; no other group photograph that day arranges itself. It also takes place wherever the cars happened to stop, which gives you the ugliest background on the schedule. Work close, fill the frame with faces, and the background stops mattering. Sehra bandi wants the reverse: indoors, immediate family, a quiet lens, nobody being told anything.
Head on, the four laavan give you one picture; take it four times and three are wasted. Each round therefore gets its own subject. The sangat listening, then hands resting on the palla, then a parent watching from where the hall narrows, then the couple alone. Langar is photographed at the height it is served, low down, steel and hands and the queue behind. Doli is given room: wide, distant, further back than instinct wants, and with nothing asked of anyone.
