The morning building and the evening building demand opposite things from a camera. Planning them as one is the standard error. Within the darbar hall, light is whatever was installed there and the rules belong to the institution; neither is yours to alter. At the reception afterwards every lamp can be moved, every corner darkened or brightened. Book those as a single approach and you get a grey morning followed by a good evening.

Everybody is down on the floor, so faces sit about a metre up and anybody upright spends the morning photographing the tops of heads. We work from a kneel, low and well back, and accept the knees. Presiding from the front, the Guru Granth Sahib caps how high a camera may go; none of ours rises above it, and that single limit quietly deletes most of the positions a photographer would otherwise choose. When the palla passes between you we are already low and already still.

Between hall and reception sits a gap that nobody plans for. The couple change, cars load, the hall empties, and one camera cannot be in both places. We would rather stay behind: relatives folding chairs and the last of the langar tell you more about the morning than a photograph of a car park does. Say which you want in advance, because there is no time on the day to decide it.
