What a Down Hall wedding costs: packages and dry hire

The packages page sets out three packages: Classic (ceremony room and banqueting suite hire, a drink on arrival, three-course breakfast, half a bottle of house wine, a toast, a six-item evening buffet, a toastmaster and a complimentary suite on the wedding night), Signature (adds canapés, a second arrival drink, an eight-item buffet and a room the night before) and Deluxe (Champagne, five canapés per guest, four courses and a white dance floor, stage and backdrop). Per-head prices for each are in the brochure rather than on the page, so ask for the current list. Bespoke Intimate packages for 2 to 30 guests are priced on request.

Dry hire, for up to 200 guests, is priced on the packages page:

  • January to April, October and November: Monday to Thursday £11,000, Friday or Sunday £12,500, Saturday £15,000.
  • May to September and December: Monday to Thursday £13,000, Friday or Sunday £15,000, Saturday £17,000.

That includes the Bridgeman Selwin Suite from 8am to midnight, the Oxford Suite and West Wing Lounge from 8am to 4pm, private use of the Charles Garden, tables and chairs for 200, the suite's preparation area and a shared kitchen, corkage, a feature room for getting ready, the Glasscock Suite for the morning, complimentary guest parking and (per the Asian weddings page) a complimentary suite on the wedding night. The year these dry hire prices apply to is not stated, so confirm them for your date.

Ceremonies at Down Hall: the West Wing, the Charles Garden and Asian weddings

The venue's planning page offers "an intimate ceremony in our West Wing" and gives its largest room as holding 180 guests, and the October 2025 brochure says the largest ceremony room is licensed for up to 180. Down Hall cannot book the registrars for you; its planning page gives the Superintendent Registrar's number, 0845 603 7632, and asks couples to contact them directly for availability.

The Charles Garden, beside the Bridgeman Suite, is described in the October 2025 brochure as a private half-acre garden reimagined for spring 2026 as an outdoor ceremony setting. It has a wide lawn with seating for up to 180 guests, framed by formal hedging, ornamental grasses and more than 40 newly planted trees, with a foliage archway as the ceremonial focal point and a 2-metre central aisle entered through a second foliage archway. The brochure also mentions a wedding gazebo in the garden, so ask which features are in place for your date.

The Asian weddings page welcomes Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and multicultural weddings, names Mehndi nights, Sangeets, Nikahs and Hindu mandap ceremonies, and offers support for a halal-certified menu, vegetarian catering and a private area for prayers and rituals. On dry hire you can bring your own Asian caterers, decorators and suppliers. What it does not publish is whether a fire may be lit indoors for a havan or pheras, or arrangements for a baraat; ask about both in writing.

Photography rules at Down Hall: what is and is not published

Down Hall publishes no specific photography rules. Its Asian weddings page presents the Gallery as a place for preparation and pictures, and the brochure offers the Gallery package for "bridal preparations and photography".

Getting ready in the Gallery and the Glasscock Suite

The venue names two preparation spaces. The Gallery is described as "the perfect bridal suite", with natural light and room for a party to gather (Asian weddings page); the Gallery package gives exclusive use the night before with a Champagne brunch (brochure). The Glasscock Suite is set aside as the second party's room, with a 65-inch screen, a games console and a pool table. Dry hire also includes a main house feature room for the morning. Hotel rooms are guaranteed from 3pm and must be vacated by 11am (FAQ).

Planning photographs in the Charles Garden, the Gallery and the grounds

  • The Charles Garden's 2-metre aisle, entered through a foliage archway with a second archway as the ceremonial focal point, frames the processional, and its lawn, formal hedging and young trees give a clean outdoor background (brochure).
  • The Bridgeman Suite has chandeliers and access straight onto the Charles Garden (brochure), so evening portraits are a few steps away.
  • The venue says its reception rooms have large windows looking onto the gardens (planning page), and the function rooms page notes ornate ceilings and "an abundance of natural daylight" in the house.
  • The Gallery is the venue's own suggested place for preparation photographs.
  • The 110 acres include woodland and parkland, and the venue calls the estate "the perfect location for photography"; plan time to reach the house front and the wider grounds.
  • The Woodland Table brunch in the kitchen garden makes a relaxed morning-after setting if you book an extra session.

Prior, Gibbs, Bridgeman and Cockerell's concrete mansion

The venue's history page traces the manor to the reign of Edward the Confessor and the brochure dates the house's history to 1322. The poet Matthew Prior commissioned James Gibbs to design a new house and Charles Bridgeman to replan the gardens, and planting was under way by 1720, but Prior died in 1721 before Gibbs's villa was started. William Selwin bought the estate in 1741. In 1871 Lord Rookwood commissioned Frederick Pepys Cockerell to build the present Italianate mansion, completed in 1873; the history page notes that it was built of poured and shuttered concrete, unusual for a house at the time. It served as a hospital from 1914 to 1919, then as Downham school, and has been owned by Veladail Hotels since 1986. The public rooms (Prior, Gibbs, Bridgeman, Selwin, Glascock, Harley, Rookwood and Lyndhurst) are named after people in that history.

Parking at Down Hall for wedding guests

Dry hire includes complimentary car parking for guests (packages page), and there are six type 2 EV chargers in the main car park next to The Barn Spa (FAQ). A space count and overnight rules are not published, so ask for a 200-guest wedding.
