We read the rhythm of a Sikh celebration and are always in the right place for the milni, the laavan and the doli. We keep the calm of the kirtan and the exuberance of the reception in equal measure. We move quietly around the darbar sahib, capturing the four laavan as they happen rather than staging them.

A residential neighbourhood on the edge of Watford in the Three Rivers area of Hertfordshire. Reached via Carpenders Park station on the London Overground Lioness line towards Watford Junction. For relaxed couple photographs, we like Oxhey Park, riverside parkland beside the River Colne in Watford, and Oxhey Chapel, a Grade II listed seventeenth century chapel founded in 1612 gives the day a strong sense of Oxhey.

The ardaas and the hukamnama that frame the ceremony are moments of stillness we capture with care. At the heart of a Sikh wedding is the Anand Karaj, the blissful union performed before the Guru Granth Sahib. The langar that follows the ceremony, shared by the whole sangat, is a moment of community we capture with warmth.

The doli, when the bride leaves her family home, is the most tender moment of the day. The day often opens early with kirtan in the gurdwara, and we are there for it. The jaggo night is an evening of music, dancing and pots lit with candles, and we capture all of its energy.
