Spare cameras and cards come to every wedding, since the four laavan are walked once and will not wait for a repair. Carpenders Park station on the London Overground Lioness line runs towards Watford Junction, which is how much of the sangat will reach Oxhey. The building that holds an anand karaj is nobody's to rearrange. Its floor level, its carpet, its windows and the standing room allowed to a camera were all decided years back, by people for whom photography was never the point. Whatever the committee there prefers, that becomes our brief, and we do not push against it. The morning gets covered as reportage under conditions we did not set: nothing introduced, nothing shifted, and enough focal length to work from a wall.
An evening room inverts the whole arrangement. It is hired, empty until somebody fills it, and its light stops being a given and becomes something chosen. Wedged in between comes the hour couples plan least, the changing, the loading of cars, a journey out of a residential neighbourhood towards a bigger town. That interval is where the loose unposed frames live, and it deserves fifteen minutes of thought rather than none.

From the first ardas to karah parshad
A milni happens outdoors, early, before anyone has warmed up, and the embraces arrive in bursts of ten seconds with no order announced. We take it from slightly below and to one side, because what matters is two faces meeting, not a line of shoulders. Inside a darbar hall everybody sits on the floor, dropping eye level by a metre and leaving any upright photographer as the tallest thing in view. So we kneel, accepting that a kneeling camera can chase nothing.
Nowhere exists to circle to during the laavan, so what changes between rounds has to be a frame's contents instead of its position. One round holds the ragis, another the parents, another the whole sangat sitting behind. A palla is a small physical detail carrying the entire meaning of the morning, and it wants a close frame that nobody notices being made. Karah parshad and langar are photographed as hands, queues and the plain business of feeding people. The doli takes our longest lens and as much distance as the space allows.
