The river is the first thing to settle in a pet session at Oxhey Park, and the answer is nearly always portraits first, water afterwards. A dog that has been in the Colne comes out with the coat flattened and darkened, the ears stuck down and the outline gone. Fifteen minutes of dry photographs cost nothing and the swim follows, which is where the loose, happy frames come from anyway. The opposite order leaves you one usable set instead of two. Coat colour decides the background more than the light does. A dark dog put against the leaves of the far bank loses its edge completely and prints as a silhouette with eyes in it. The same animal on open grass, lit across rather than from behind, keeps the line of the back and the shape of the ears. Pale dogs have the opposite problem and want the shaded ground under the trees, where nothing blows out. Recall beside water, on a path other dogs use, is the honest limit on off-lead work. Where recall is patchy we use a long line and take it out in the edit, which is quicker than an hour of hoping. Rabbits, cats and any anxious or elderly animal do better at your own house in Oxhey than brought anywhere. The journey costs more of their patience than the session does, and a fifteen year old dog with stiff hips has a limited number of good minutes to spend.

The studio at The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 1NU is a short drive from Oxhey, an easy car ride even for a pet that dislikes travel. Pet sittings are booked ahead, and prints, frames, restoration and scanning are all produced on the premises. Studio pet sittings fit within 10:30 to 18:00 Monday to Saturday and 13:00 to 18:00 on Sunday, and an Oxhey dog does best booked after its usual morning walk.
