Two things about Oxhey Woods shape a session with a dog. The first is that it is protected ground rather than an open field, so we plan on the assumption that your dog stays under close control, building the pictures around a short radius: the animal coming towards the camera and stopping, instead of a long run across country. That is not really a loss. Frames made close in are sharper, better lit and more about the dog's face than any distance shot. The second is light against movement. Under a closed canopy the shutter is already slow, and a slow shutter with a moving animal produces nothing usable. Anything with the dog in motion belongs at the outer edges or in a gap where sky reaches the floor. The interior is for a dog that will stand or sit. Colour is the trap here, more than brightness. Through autumn the floor becomes a wide field of mid-brown litter, and a fawn, red or brindle dog on it simply disappears. The fix is to change what is behind the animal rather than the exposure: a trunk, a stand of green, a gap with light in it. For an older dog, roots and litter hide dips and holes, so keep the walking short and photograph on the way back, once the legs are warm. For an anxious one, the woods beat the residential roads either side, and the lead stays on until we are well inside.
