A canal is a different proposition from a river as far as a dog is concerned. The Grand Union carries walls rather than shelving banks along much of its length, so an animal going in cannot reliably climb out, and that single point governs which dogs we take onto the Kings Langley towpath. Dependable recall, or a long line, and it works. A dog treating its name as a suggestion belongs in the Gade valley meadows, where the worst that happens is a wet belly and a slow trudge back. The remedy is the background and not the exposure: put that same dog on the pale surface of the path, or on grass lit from open sky, and the shape returns. Light coats reverse the problem and want the shade beneath the hedge. Elderly and anxious dogs get less ground to cover and longer in which to cover it, while rabbits, cats and poor travellers are done indoors at their own house.
