We work at the animal's pace. A nervous dog gets the first ten minutes with the camera down, and an older one gets a session built from short walks, sitting and standing rather than running. Nothing is asked twice if it clearly is not going to happen.
Bring the toy and the treats that genuinely work, and somebody the dog will actually look at, because a photographer calling a name is a stranger calling a name. You get the still portraits and the moving frames, with leads and lines cleaned up in editing.

Bring water, a towel and one treat the animal does not usually get, held back for the frames that matter.

We would start in a dog-friendly part of King George Recreation Ground and let the dog take the edge off before asking for anything, then move to Bushey Rose Garden for still frames on a short lead. Bring a long line and whatever noise gets an ear up at home, saved for when we ask rather than spent on the walk over.
Yes. We photograph horses and ponies at the stables or in the field, and small pets like rabbits and guinea pigs in the studio. Horse, rabbit or guinea pig, the approach is the same: calm, unhurried, and never pushing the animal further than it wants to go.

Two good places to photograph an animal in Bushey ask for opposite handling, and it is worth deciding which before the day rather than on it. Bushey Rose Garden is planted and kept to a design, so it is a lead-on location and we would not pretend otherwise. An animal in among formal beds is a problem for the garden and a poor frame regardless, because the planting crowds the subject and the hard edges of the beds cut across legs. What the garden does well is the still portrait, taken close in, with the animal sitting and the geometry behind it dropped out of focus. Anything with running in it belongs in the parts of King George Recreation Ground where dogs are welcome. Open ground has one weakness worth planning around, which is that it offers little shade or shelter. Under a high sun the light comes straight down, the brow throws the eye sockets into darkness, and an animal cannot be asked to lift its chin, so we drop the camera to the height of the animal's own head and work late in the day when the light arrives flat from the side. Wind is the other open-ground factor. It lifts a long coat, which can help, and it carries scent, which does not, since scent is what turns a settled dog into a distracted one. Older animals generally do better in the garden, where the distance between one setup and the next is a few paces. Anxious animals do better on the open grounds, where nothing comes close enough to startle them.

Bringing your pet from Bushey to Northwood
A studio session means a drive of about 4 miles from Bushey to The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 1NU, which keeps the car journey short for an animal that dislikes travelling. Animals and people alike are photographed there by appointment, and passport photos, printing, framing, restoration and scanning are all done in house. Pet sittings fit within opening hours, 10:30 to 18:00 from Monday to Saturday and 13:00 to 18:00 on Sundays, and a mid-morning slot lets a Bushey dog have its walk first and arrive tired rather than wound up.
