We plan for about forty-five minutes of photography and treat the first twenty as the productive part. Small children get one instruction at a time, and older relatives get somewhere to sit between frames instead of standing through all of it.
If the weather turns, the session moves indoors to Northwood instead of being cancelled and pushed back weeks, and nothing a baby needs has to be carried across wet ground. You receive the whole-group frames, the pairings, and the unposed ones that happen in between.

Feeding, changing and settling are part of the session rather than interruptions to it, and a newborn sitting pauses as many times as the baby requires.

King George Recreation Ground, opened in 1912 for the coronation of King George V, has a splash pad, play areas and a café, which makes it a practical base for a session with small children. Bushey offers a family two locations with opposite characters, and choosing the wrong one for the ages involved can make an outdoor session go flat. Bushey Rose Garden is enclosed and laid out to a plan, which means a small child has a boundary and the adults are not spending the session retrieving anybody. It also means the backgrounds sit close to one another, so a group of eight can be moved through three setups without a march between them. That matters most when a grandparent is in the frame, since standing about is the tiring part, not the photography. King George Recreation Ground does the opposite job: 22 acres with room to run, long sightlines, and frames where children are moving instead of arranged. Older children get a great deal out of that. Under-fives rarely do. A three-generation group is a technical problem before it is a happy one. A wide line of people needs everyone roughly the same distance from the camera or the far end goes soft, so we build a shallow arc rather than a straight line, and we take the whole-group frame first while the youngest person present is still interested in us. Attention runs out well before the light does. When it rains, or when the wind is up across open ground, the Northwood studio is the better call and not a consolation prize: indoors, a three-year-old will give more usable expression in twenty minutes than an hour outdoors in weather will produce. A pram also handles garden paths far better than long grass.

Visiting the studio from Bushey
Our studio at The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 1NU is roughly 4 miles from Bushey, close enough to come in for a sitting and still be home for nap time. Family sittings are by appointment, and the studio also prints, frames, restores and scans in house. Doors open at 10:30 Monday to Saturday and at 13:00 on Sundays, closing at 18:00 each day, which leaves a Sunday morning free for the play areas at King George Recreation Ground before an afternoon family sitting.
