Yes, and the order matters. Older children are photographed with the baby first, while they are still interested, then the baby alone once they have run off. The room wants to be warm rather than tidy. Feeds and changes happen when they happen and we simply stop, so allow more time than the session length implies and bring a spare outfit for everybody.
Pick two or three colours and let everybody work within them rather than all wearing the same thing, which photographs as a uniform. Avoid large logos and busy patterns, since both compete with faces. On The Green, mid tones read best: strong green blends into the background and white goes very bright in sunlight. Bring footwear that copes with damp grass.
Honestly, they do not have to. Expecting a toddler to sit and smile to order rarely works, so we turn everything into play and photograph what genuinely happens. Some of the images families treasure most come from little ones simply being themselves. Croxley Green is a Hertfordshire village beside the Chess and Gade valleys, arranged around one of the longest village greens in England. Croxley station sits on the Watford branch of the London Underground Metropolitan line, between Watford and Moor Park. For on-location sessions we often head to spots such as Croxley Common Moor, close to the well-known All Saints Church and the historic tree lined village green known as The Green.

What decides a family session in Croxley Green is not the background, it is how far anybody has to walk carrying something. That second stretch is usually where the pictures worth printing come from. Weather decides the rest. Rain on its own rarely stops anything, but wind across open ground does: a cold wind shuts small faces down within minutes and no amount of coaxing reopens them. On those days we move to the room in Northwood, where the temperature is fixed and the light never shifts, and the session simply happens indoors.
