Relaxed family photography in Croxley Green

We begin with the frames needing everybody to look the same way, because that cooperation is a finite resource. After those, the session turns into walking, throwing children about, and letting them forget the camera, which is where the printable pictures appear.

Sessions move in short stretches with pauses between them, and the schedule carries enough slack that a meltdown costs nothing at all. The edited set comes back complete, with some frames converted to monochrome where the light suits it better than colour does.

Naming what you actually want in advance helps enormously, whether that is one wall portrait, a set of prints for grandparents, or simply a record of this exact year. Teenagers are given the same courtesy as adults, told what is happening and asked rather than instructed, which usually turns the sulkiest one into an ally.

Sessions can run at the natural-light studio on The Broadway in Northwood, at your home among your own things, or outdoors in a park you already use. Sessions can take place in our Northwood studio or outdoors in a park your family loves, whichever suits you best.

Family Photographer in Croxley Green, FAQs

Yes, and the order matters. Older children are photographed with the baby first, while they are still interested, then the baby alone once they have run off. The room wants to be warm rather than tidy. Feeds and changes happen when they happen and we simply stop, so allow more time than the session length implies and bring a spare outfit for everybody.

Pick two or three colours and let everybody work within them rather than all wearing the same thing, which photographs as a uniform. Avoid large logos and busy patterns, since both compete with faces. On The Green, mid tones read best: strong green blends into the background and white goes very bright in sunlight. Bring footwear that copes with damp grass.

Honestly, they do not have to. Expecting a toddler to sit and smile to order rarely works, so we turn everything into play and photograph what genuinely happens. Some of the images families treasure most come from little ones simply being themselves. Locally in Croxley Green that takes in all Saints Church and the historic tree lined village green known as The Green.

Yes. Large groups need width, so we use an open stretch of The Green and stand back instead of cramming everybody together. Tell us the head count and whether anyone cannot stand for long, because that decides whether the arrangement is built around chairs. The complete group is photographed early, then broken into smaller combinations, which is quicker than working the other way round.

We offer fine prints, framed wall art, canvases and beautifully hand-finished albums, each designed around your favourite photographs. Following the session you view a carefully edited gallery online, then choose the pieces that fit your walls, your home and your family. We cover Croxley Green and nearby Cassiobury, Oxhey and Moor Park.

Serving Croxley Green

A family photographer near Croxley Green

We photograph family sessions right across Hertfordshire, and Croxley Green (WD3) is well within our regular patch. It sits close to Chorleywood and Mill End, which we cover too. You are always welcome at the Northwood studio too.

Croxley Green is a Hertfordshire village beside the Chess and Gade valleys, arranged around one of the longest village greens in England. Croxley station sits on the Watford branch of the London Underground Metropolitan line, between Watford and Moor Park. For on-location sessions we often head to spots such as Croxley Common Moor, close to the well-known All Saints Church and the historic tree lined village green known as The Green.

What decides a family session in Croxley Green is not the background, it is how far anybody has to walk carrying something. A pram, a bag and a child who has decided to be carried put a hard limit on distance, and the useful property of a green this long is that one stretch of it photographs much like another, so we pick the section nearest to wherever the car can be left rather than the most photogenic one. Nobody looking at the finished pictures can tell the difference, and the session begins in a better mood for it. Grandparents change the plan more than the children do. If anyone cannot stand for long, or is unsteady on grass, we build the group around them seated and bring everybody else down to that level, which also fixes the standard fault of a family picture where one adult is a head taller than the rest. Order matters because attention is finite. Young children spend their cooperation early, so the frames needing everyone facing the same way happen at the start, and the unstructured part comes later, once they have stopped performing and gone back to ignoring us. That second stretch is usually where the pictures worth printing come from. Weather decides the rest. Rain on its own rarely stops anything, but wind across open ground does: a cold wind shuts small faces down within minutes and no amount of coaxing reopens them. On those days we move to the room in Northwood, where the temperature is fixed and the light never shifts, and the session simply happens indoors.
