Water along one side of the path is what gets settled first when a Kings Langley family session includes a child who runs. The Grand Union Canal towpath is level, made up and easy on a pram, which recommends it for any group bringing a buggy, or somebody who does not want marching across a field. It is also open to the canal the whole way along, so with a toddler it becomes a job for two adults and the photography quietly stops being the point. The honest split is by age. Towpath for families whose youngest can be trusted to hold a hand; Gade valley meadows for everybody else, since open grass lets a small child bolt in any direction and find nothing bad waiting there. The meadows come with a condition of their own. Low ground beside a river drains slowly, so a wet week leaves the grass soaking for days after the rain gives up, which is a footwear question rather than a cancelled booking. We pick between the two the day before, not weeks in advance, and we say which one plainly. Order matters more than most people expect. Everybody in one frame happens early, while your youngest still finds a person carrying a camera worth watching; pairs, siblings and the running about pictures follow afterwards, when nobody minds that concentration has gone. With a baby, or deep in winter, the better room is simply the Northwood studio and the towpath has no case at all.
