Gold Hill Common sits near the centre of the village, and for a family session that proximity does more work than the scenery does. The distance between where the car stops and where the camera goes is the whole battle with young children, because every minute spent walking is a minute of good humour spent before anything has been photographed. There is room to find three or four different frames without crossing the whole common, so we settle in one corner and let the group stay put. Grass is the other thing to plan around. It is forgiving for a child who wants to be on the floor and unforgiving for anyone who does not, and from autumn through to spring it holds water long after the sky has cleared, which means an older relative in good shoes ends up standing for the entire session. When the group includes somebody who cannot get down onto the ground, we build the frames around a standing adult with the children arranged low, so the arrangement reads as a decision rather than a compromise. Small children spend their best behaviour early and have little left afterwards, so we photograph the children first and the adults second, never the other way round. The studio earns its place more often than families expect. In the dark half of the year the Common has usable light for a short window in the middle of the day, and that window is frequently when the youngest child sleeps. Indoors that clash disappears and the session runs to your timetable instead of the sun's.
