Shardeloes is where family sessions in Amersham go, and knowing what it is not saves a wasted trip. It is parkland attached to a Georgian country house on the edge of Old Amersham, rather than a municipal park. No play equipment, nothing for sale, so anything likely to keep a four year old going for the next hour arrives in a bag you packed yourself. The reverse of that coin is worth having. A weekend afternoon out there puts nothing like the number of strangers through the back of a frame that a town park will. What parkland does set as a difficulty is scale. Photographed from a comfortable distance in a space that large, a family comes out small and adrift with acres of nothing around them, so the two jobs get done apart: close frames where the group fills the picture and faces stay legible, then a handful taken deliberately wide, where the park is the subject and everybody is small in it on purpose. Attempting both in one exposure yields neither. Older children who want something to do rather than something to stand still for tend to do better on the walk down into Old Amersham, where there is at least a street to look at, than on another twenty minutes of open grass. Little Chalfont, Coleshill and Old Amersham are covered as well. If the day turns out to be one where nobody is cooperating, we would sooner move it to another date than spend an hour proving the point.
