Tell us where you would rather meet on the Common, and choose it for parking rather than for scenery, since the walk in is the part that tires small children out. We get there ahead of you and find workable ground before the session starts.

The first few weeks are best, while a baby sleeps most deeply, and we would photograph them in the warm studio rather than outdoors. It helps to contact us while you are still expecting, so we can hold a provisional date near your due date and move it once baby arrives.

Wear mid tones, and make one decision for the family rather than five separate ones: choose two or three colours and let everybody pick within them. Against the greens and browns of the Common, olive, khaki and rust sink into the background, so leave them out. Everyone, adults included, should wear boots or old trainers. The ground is rough and wet grass gets straight through anything thin.

We certainly do. A milestone sitting records a stage such as sitting up, first steps or a first birthday, and for babies we would usually suggest the warm Northwood room over the Common. Two or three sittings across the first year give you a record of each stage, and the studio keeps them consistent whatever the weather.

Bring a folding stool or a rug if standing for a long time is hard, because common land guarantees no bench where we want to be. Photographs of three generations work well on the level ground at the open edge; walking in among the roots does not.
