A regional park meadow is a harder place to bring a family than a town park, and knowing that beforehand is what makes the morning work. There are no swings to bribe a four year old with, no railed paths, and the distance from where you leave the car to open grass is longer than it looks on a map. Pram wheels are the usual casualty. Meadow grass and a soft margin after rain will stop a light buggy dead, so we pick firm ground first and bring the family to it rather than the reverse. Grandparents set the range. If somebody in the group is unsteady on uneven turf, the whole session is built within a short distance of a made path, and that is worth telling us when you book rather than letting us find it out on the day. Denham Country Park has the openness that suits a running about picture. It has no shelter, so a bright cold January morning is short and brisk by design. Small children give a good half hour of real attention and then it is spent. So the frames that need everyone pointed the same way come early, and the loose ones follow, once nobody minds who is looking where. Wet weather is the argument for the Northwood room. Newborns, toddlers who nap to a fixed timetable, and any booking where three generations have to sit down together are all steadier indoors, where the light does not change while coats are coming off.
