For Denham
Sessions are short by design and led by the animal. We stop when the dog has stopped enjoying itself, which is usually well inside an hour. A long line stays clipped on for a dog whose recall is unreliable, and it is edited out afterwards.
The edited set holds both the still portrait and the running frames, because owners almost always want the pair. We keep the near eye sharp above everything else, since a dog portrait with soft eyes is a failed frame however good the light was.

What we offer
Dogs photographed on the Denham meadows; cats and small animals at home, where they are already calm.
Sessions end at the dog's pace rather than running to a fixed hour marked on the diary.
Older and nervous animals kept to firm ground and short distances, with the camera doing the moving.
Twenty-five years behind the lens
Owners are kept in the room and used deliberately, since a dog will give a look to its own person that no stranger can ever hope to get. Walking a dog that will not settle beats pressing on. Ten minutes outside resets an animal far more effectively than another twenty minutes of trying indoors.
Action frames of a dog running, jumping or catching are taken outdoors, where there is room and light enough for a genuinely fast shutter speed. One photographer runs the session, which keeps the room quiet, and no assistant appears unless the work genuinely calls for a second pair of hands.

Recent work
Good to know
Very often. A puppy or kitten session captures those fast-changing early weeks before they grow up. We keep it gentle and playful, working in short bursts and letting the little one explore, so the pictures hold all the character of those first months. Locally in Denham that takes in Denham Film Studios site and the medieval St Mary's Church.
Because what is on offer in Denham is a route rather than a promise. The plan is a first or last hour booking on the country park, a firm ground alternative for wet weeks, and a rebooking instead of a rushed hour if the dog is having a bad day. You are told which of the three you are getting before you leave the house.
Both. Outdoor work in Denham happens on the country park meadows, which suit dogs that need room and cannot be photographed standing still. The Northwood room suits cats, rabbits, small animals, dark coated dogs that need controlled light, and any animal uneasy about being loose in an open field. Plenty of bookings use each of them on separate days.
Extremely. Twenty-five years behind the lens and thousands of sessions have brought dogs, cats, horses and small pets of every age and character before us. All that time shows in a calm, quick and gentle presence that soon puts even nervous animals at their ease. For Denham bookings, getting here is simple: Denham railway station sits on the Chiltern Main Line with direct services to London Marylebone, and Junction 1 of the M40 is nearby.
No, it is usually an advantage, because a dog that will not settle gives movement frames and those are the ones people keep. The practical steps: walk the edge off before we start, keep the lead clipped on until the first frames are done, and hand the treats to us rather than holding them, since a dog watching its owner is watching the wrong direction.

Denham is a Buckinghamshire village near the Colne valley, long associated with Denham Film Studios and a historic conservation-area village centre. Denham railway station sits on the Chiltern Main Line with direct services to London Marylebone, and Junction 1 of the M40 is nearby. Open meadow changes a dog session in ways a park of hedged paths does not. Sightlines run a long way, so another dog is visible two fields off instead of appearing round a corner at ten feet. For a reactive or anxious animal that is the strongest argument for this ground. There is time to see what is coming, change line, and carry on, and the pictures stop having to be snatched between interruptions. Footing is the trade. Meadow turf after wet weather is deep going, and a heavy or elderly dog tires in it far faster than on a surfaced path, which cuts the useful part of a session to perhaps twenty minutes of movement. Older animals do better held to the firm ground with the camera doing the travelling. Grass height matters more than the calendar. A terrier in unmown summer meadow is a head above green, which is charming once and useless as a set, so short grass or a mown margin is where a small dog is actually photographable, and a low position there puts distance behind the ears instead of a wall of stems. Colne valley water is the other feature and it brings an order of operations with it. Dry fur carries texture and catches light, soaked fur turns into a dark rope, so swimming frames belong at the finish. Pale meadow grass in late summer is, incidentally, the best background a black dog gets all year. Dark fur separates from bleached stems in a way it never manages against woodland.
