Denham Country Park sits inside the Colne Valley Regional Park, and riverside meadow behaves nothing like a municipal park lawn. That is the first thing which decides a sitting here. Meadow ground holds water, and for days after real rain the surface stays soft enough that heels sink and the walk out to the open grass, not the light, becomes the thing that shapes the session. Access changes with the season as well, so a February booking and a June booking are two different sessions on the same ground. Meadow is also open, which means no canopy to soften the sun. From late morning to mid afternoon in summer the light falls straight down, the eye sockets go dark and the crown of the head goes bright, so the first and last hours are the ones worth having. The river edge is the exception. Water returns light upward and lifts the underside of the face, and a bank position will rescue a frame that has gone lifeless out on the grass. Clothing should answer the grass rather than the calendar. Dry summer meadow photographs pale and warm, so cream and stone vanish into it while deep green, rust and navy hold their edges. Winter grass turns grey brown and flat, and then a lighter top is the one that reads. Denham is long associated with the film studios site, but association is not a location. What decides a portrait here is the meadow, the river edge, and the hard surfaces of the conservation area village centre on the weeks when the going is too soft to leave them.
