For Amersham
A sitting is built around two locations instead of one, which Amersham makes straightforward and which doubles the choice waiting at the end. The opening minutes go on getting used to a camera, and those frames exist to be deleted; what you are shown begins after that.
You see the full set of frames and choose from them; we retouch only what you pick. Rain on the day is not a lost booking either: the sitting either shifts to the Northwood studio or moves to another date, and you decide which on the morning.

What we offer
Outdoor sittings around Old Amersham and Shardeloes, or the Northwood studio when the light will not cooperate.
Individual sittings, couples and birthdays that deserve marking, taken at whatever pace the person being photographed actually wants.
Every frame shown, retouching on the ones you choose, and files sized for both print and screen.
Why choose us
We are patient with children and older sitters alike, and shape the pace of the session around whoever is in front of us. We keep every portrait session relaxed and unhurried, so there is never any pressure to rush or to pose stiffly.
Nothing is printed before you have chosen it. Framed portraits, fine prints on paper, canvases and hand-finished albums are all made up afterwards, once your favourites are settled. On-location sittings work best in the hour before sunset, when the light is low enough to shape a face without making anyone squint into it.

Good to know
Plan for an hour to ninety minutes for an outdoor sitting in Amersham, most of it spent walking from one background to the next rather than posed at any of them. Studio sittings run shorter. The photography itself takes less time than people expect; the length comes from letting someone stop performing, and that tends to happen in the second set of frames, not the first.
After your Amersham session you receive a gallery of carefully edited portraits to pick your favourites from. From there you can order fine prints, framed pieces, canvases and hand-finished albums, or simply keep the digital images. Our editing is light and natural, so you always look yourself.
Because there are two usable backgrounds within one sitting here and we plan for both. Shardeloes gives open parkland and distance behind the subject; the older streets by the Market Hall and St Mary's Church give something built and textured. Beginning at the parkland and finishing among the buildings means one booking yields two sets that do not resemble each other.
In The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6. Sittings booked from Amersham usually take place at your end instead, and the studio covers days when the weather has decided otherwise, for winter evenings with no daylight left after work, and for anyone wanting nothing behind them but plain tone. Directions and parking go out with the confirmation.
Plain, mid-tone and long in the sleeve holds up against both backgrounds Amersham offers, since parkland reads green and busy while old brick and timber read warm and busy, and pattern loses against either. A single alternative top in a contrasting shade beats bringing a suitcase. What goes on your feet counts for a great deal when a sitting takes in wet grass at Shardeloes.
Serving Amersham
Amersham is a Chilterns market town with old and new quarters, in Buckinghamshire. It sits close to Denham and Chesham, which we cover too. From our Northwood base we reach Amersham easily, whether you prefer a studio sitting or portrait photography on location.
Amersham is a Chilterns market town split between the historic Old Amersham and the newer Amersham-on-the-Hill built up around the station. Amersham station is a shared terminus for the London Underground Metropolitan line and Chiltern Railways. When a session suits an outdoor setting, Shardeloes is a favourite near Amersham, close to the 17th century Market Hall in Old Amersham.

The two halves of Amersham do not run out of light at the same moment. Old Amersham sits down in the valley and Amersham-on-the-Hill stands above it, and the ground behind the old town takes the sun off it while the streets by the station are still bright. That is a scheduling fact rather than a scenic one. A sitting meant to take in both ends is booked to begin low and finish high, never the reverse, because getting the order wrong on a February afternoon leaves the second half lit by whatever remains. At Shardeloes the parkland behaves unlike a public park, since the trees there stand singly instead of in belts. Each one drops a defined pool of shade with a hard rim to it, and placing someone a stride inside that rim gives even light on the face while the sunlit park stays bright behind, which settles most of what strong summer sun otherwise ruins. Water is useful here on a different count. Grass, branches and railings all carry detail; still water carries none, making it the only background out there that reduces to a plain band of tone behind a shoulder. On the exposed higher ground hair does things it never does down in the valley, so bring a clip or a band if the morning was spent on it, and expect a certain amount of it to be lost anyway.
