A portrait sitting often turns on one picture rather than a set, so the decision that carries it is what goes behind you. The town offers two answers a short walk apart, and the two do opposite jobs. Lowndes Park is open ground, which lets us put real distance between you and everything else in shot, and it is distance that leaves a background as tone alone, not a set of shapes arguing with a face. Grass and trees also date a picture. Anyone seeing it later can name the season within a month or so, which suits a family record and works against an author photo meant to hold up for years. The stone of St Mary's, a short walk from that same park, does the reverse. It is a broken mid tone that gives no season away and sits behind a head without pulling at it, although a wall means working close, so the background stays sharp and you carry the picture unaided. Clothing is where a Chilterns sky decides things. Under flat white cloud, plain cotton goes papery and loses its folds, while knit, cord and anything with a surface to it keeps some modelling. Pick the second layer by weight rather than by colour. Should the weather turn, we take the sitting in our Northwood room instead, and that call is usually left until the evening before.
