Chesham is a market town with most of its independent shops on the High Street and others in cobbled yards, a general market on the High Street and a monthly local produce market in Market Square. Chesham station on Station Approach is the Zone 9 terminus of the Metropolitan line, the same line as Northwood Hills, the studio's nearest station. The town's trading roots run deep: No. 12 High Street was the first shop of the draper Arthur Liberty, whose son later opened the Liberty store on Regent Street, and Chesham is known for its 'four Bs' of boots, beer, brushes and Baptists.

Chesham has held a market since its royal charter of 1257, and the consequence for commercial work is who the pictures are aimed at. A business trading from the middle of a town like this gets photographed mainly for people who could walk through its door the same afternoon. That is a different brief from a national brand, whose pictures only have to look like the category they belong to. Here they have to be recognisable. The frontage should be the frontage, the room should be the room, the people should be the ones a customer will actually meet, because somebody will hold the picture against the door and decide from it. The technical half of that is verticals. Older buildings put the camera near a wall, and near plus wide tempts you into tilting upwards, which leans every upright in the room inwards and turns a real space into an estate agent listing. Holding the camera level and losing the surplus in the crop is slower and always pays. We take the space empty before anybody is in it, then again in use, which yields two sets from one visit: clean rooms for a website, and the same rooms occupied for anything that needs to look alive. A frontage is worth taking when the light is actually on it rather than when the shop happens to be quiet, and those two moments rarely coincide. Where a room simply will not hold a setup, the Northwood studio covers portraits and the smaller product work.
