Serving Mill End
Family sessions run across Mill End, Rickmansworth, Batchworth and West Hyde, and most bookings here are three generations rather than two, with grandparents travelling in to make the day worth organising. Outdoors is the default, with the Northwood studio kept back for a day that refuses to cooperate, which in this valley is a fair share of the winter.
The useful preparation is clothing. Pick two or three tones that sit near each other and let everybody choose within that range, because six matching navy tops photograph as one lump and six unrelated colours photograph as an argument. Texture does more work than pattern, and nobody needs anything new.

What we offer
Three generations in one session at the Aquadrome, on level paths that suit prams and slower walkers.
Short spells with breaks, so small children are photographed while they are still interested.
Everyone in the group receives the same gallery, so nobody is left chasing pictures afterwards.
Twenty-five years behind the lens
We meet at the William Penn Leisure Centre or at the Aquadrome, whichever is easier for you, and walk to the ground from there. We start moving as soon as everyone is out of the cars, because a family stood waiting quickly stops looking like one.
Sessions are broken up rather than run straight through, so no small child is asked to perform for an hour without a rest. Everyone in the group receives the same gallery afterwards, which saves one person forwarding pictures to everybody else for a fortnight.

Good to know
Yes. Late pregnancy portraits are easier to plan in Mill End than in most places, because the Aquadrome paths are flat and made up and there is no trek to reach a spot. We can work within sight of where the car is left, keep the session short, and avoid standing about between frames. Most people book in the final couple of months, or earlier if there is more than one on the way.
Of course, and we encourage it. When Mill End families come to us, parents are very much in the pictures, not just watching from the side. We photograph the group, then smaller sets and each child alone, so no cuddle or combination is ever missed.
It is a first-birthday celebration where your baby digs into a cake of their own. Families in Mill End love them, and we capture the build-up, the glorious mess and the sheer delight as it unfolds. Honestly, it is one of the most joyful sessions around.
Yes, and for family work that is the normal way round. Sessions happen in Mill End itself, at the Aquadrome or at your own house, and Rickmansworth, Batchworth and West Hyde all fall in the same round. Tell us which meeting point suits, or we will name one at the William Penn Leisure Centre, which everybody locally can find. The Northwood studio stays available for a wet day.
Yes. Milestone sessions mark the moments that matter as your baby grows, from sitting up and first steps to a first birthday. Booking a few sessions across the year lets you look back on each stage, and the changes are wonderful to see. Around Mill End we plan for landmarks such as The William Penn Leisure Centre, named after the former school on the site.
Serving Mill End
Our studio is in Northwood, so Mill End (WD3) is part of our core Hertfordshire area. It sits close to Croxley Green and Maple Cross, which we cover too. Sessions run at the studio or on location in Mill End, and there is no travel charge for local bookings.
A suburb of Rickmansworth in the Colne valley, historically a hamlet with a paper mill, tannery and brewery. Sits on the A412 Uxbridge Road, with the nearest station at Rickmansworth on the Metropolitan line and Chiltern Railways. For on-location sessions we often head to spots such as Rickmansworth Aquadrome with Bury Lake and Stockers Lake, close to the well-known The William Penn Leisure Centre.

The Rickmansworth Aquadrome is the reason a Mill End family session rarely needs a second location, and the argument for it is the path surface rather than the view. The lakeside circuits are level and made up, which counts for more than anything scenic when the group includes a pram, a grandparent who would rather not be crossing wet grass, and a four year old who has already announced that his legs hurt. Nobody has to be helped over anything, and no one is left behind at a gate. Water changes how we work with the smallest children, though. A lake edge and a toddler is a supervision problem before it is a photographic one, so we keep well back from the bank and use the water as a background rather than as somewhere to stand. It still does the useful thing of throwing light back into the group, and nobody spends the session being watched instead of photographed. Order matters more than anything else on the day. The whole group frame gets made first, while the youngest is still willing to be part of it, because that is the picture destined for a wall and it cannot be recovered once patience has run out. Pairs and singles follow, and those survive a bit of chaos. When the valley floor is soft underfoot, or the light has already gone in January, the Northwood studio is the sensible alternative and nothing about the pictures suffers for it.
