There is not a lot in a nikah for a camera to take hold of. Brief, seated, quiet. The thing that makes the marriage is said aloud rather than performed, so nothing dramatic presents itself and the photographs come instead from the faces ringing it: a father listening hard, witnesses tilting forward, the beat of silence ahead of the answer. Longer glass at the back wall, no flash, plenty of patience.
Signing is the only obvious set piece the ceremony offers, and worth getting done before a crowd forms around the table. The walima then carries you into a second building with an entirely different problem: a large room, warm artificial light and speeches delivered from a top table, where the pictures worth having sit out in the audience rather than at the front. We would sooner work that room quietly than march a hundred people outside for a formal line.
