Handing the signed nikah-nama across the table is a small administrative act with enormous weight, and we photograph the paper changing hands as carefully as we photograph the couple. Two witnesses sit close to the signing, and we make sure they appear in the frames, because their presence is what makes the contract complete. Only two or three frames are made during the dua itself. Restraint here is the whole point, and a photographer working the moment hard would ruin what makes it worth keeping.

Dhol players deserve their own frames. The blur of the sticks, the strain in the shoulders and the crowd feeding off the rhythm are what make a baraat picture work. During the dholki the drum passes from lap to lap, and we photograph the clapping circle, the improvised verses and the women singing late into the evening. Music and dancing fill the dholki, and we photograph the circle of women clapping, the singing and the aunties who turn out to be the best dancers in the family.
