The vows and the signing of the nikah-nama

Handing the signed nikah-nama across the table is a small administrative act with enormous weight, and we photograph the paper changing hands as carefully as we photograph the couple. Immediately after the ceremony comes a scattering of small, unplanned moments, a mother's hand on a shoulder, a brother's grin, and we stay in the room to gather them before the hall clears. Just before the offer is made there is a pause, the room settles and everyone leans slightly forward. We hold on the couple through it, because the anticipation belongs in the album too.

Long tables, elders served first and two families becoming one over a meal, the sharing of food at the walima is something we photograph with care. Walima is the groom's family's invitation to the community, and it deserves to be photographed as a proper occasion: the entrance, the stage, the speeches, the meal and the room slowly filling. Mangni is where two families commit in front of each other, and the rings, the sweets and the handshakes between fathers are worth covering properly rather than treating as a warm-up.
