Commercial work in Croxley Green is the one service where the studio address is beside the point, because the pictures have to be made where the work happens. What decides the day is the building. Village premises are rarely built with photography in mind: the usable part of a room is often the part with the window in it, and the window is often directly behind the thing that needs photographing. Shooting into daylight with a subject in front of it produces a bright rectangle and a silhouette, so the first job on arrival is working out which way the glass faces and setting the running order around it, taking the rooms that face the light early and leaving the darker side until our own lighting is up. Mixed sources are the other recurring problem. A room with daylight down one side and warm ceiling lamps overhead renders one person's skin cool and another's orange inside the same frame, and no correction afterwards fixes both at once. The reliable answer is to overpower or switch off one of them instead of trying to balance them. Overhead light on its own is the worst case: it lands on the forehead and the top of the cheekbone and leaves the eyes as two dark hollows, which is why we turn up with light of our own even when a room looks perfectly bright to the naked eye. For a team, the whole point is that the finished set looks like one visit. Same background, same camera height, same distance for every person, whatever order they arrive in.
