The short answer

Do you offer commercial photography in Hertfordshire?

Yes. Kaushik photographs products, premises, staff at work and images for advertising, websites and brochures for Hertfordshire businesses. Larger shoots happen on site, whether that is an office in Watford, a shop on Marlowes in Hemel Hempstead or a farm near Sarratt; smaller products can come to the Northwood studio. Prices are given on request, and travel from Northwood is written into your quote before you book.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Hertfordshire, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

…I needed some photos done for my acting career and Kaushik came highly recommended. It was helpful to know he is very experienced in taking photos for this purpose and kindly advised me on what outfits to wear to produce the best photos. Kaushik was very patient, helpful and professional which made it very easy to feel relaxed and comfortable during the shoot.

What we photograph

Products, premises and people for Hertfordshire businesses

Commercial photography covers anything a business needs to show customers. That might be products on a clean background for an online shop, the inside of a restaurant for its booking page, staff at work for a recruitment campaign, or a building for a letting agent. Many firms need a mix, and one well-planned day can cover most of it.

We start with where the photographs will be used, because that decides the shape and style. A website banner needs wide frames with space for text; social media wants squares and verticals; a brochure needs a consistent look across many pages; an advert needs one strong image. Tell us the uses, and the shot list follows.

High streets and markets

Shops, cafés and market traders on Hertfordshire's high streets

Hertfordshire's town centres are full of independent businesses that need good photographs. St Albans holds a street market every Wednesday and Saturday, and the council's St Peter's Street markets, which trace their origin to 860, ran 136 market events in 2022, with traders from long-standing family firms to first-time start-ups. Hitchin holds general markets every Tuesday and Saturday, and Watford Market is a covered box park of shops and eateries with outdoor stalls on the High Street.

Beyond the markets, Radlett's shops, pubs and restaurants run along Watling Street, Bushey High Street is a protected conservation area, and Stevenage Old Town keeps its original High Street layout with independent shops and cafés. In Hemel Hempstead, Marlowes is the pedestrianised main shopping street. For shops and cafés, we photograph early, before opening, when the shelves are full and the floor is clear.

Business parks

Industrial units and business parks from Watford to Maylands

Away from the high streets, much of Hertfordshire's business life is on its business parks. Watford Business Park covers 30 hectares around Greenhill Crescent, Caxton Way and Faraday Close, where a gateway scheme is adding 14 flexible units aimed at film, TV, life sciences and manufacturing. Maylands Business Park is Hemel Hempstead's main industrial area, and Home Park Industrial Estate beside Kings Langley station houses many local firms.

In Hertsmere, Otterspool Way in Bushey is one of five designated Employment Areas, and Maple Cross has an industrial and business area east of the village, used by company offices for its motorway access. For a manufacturer or engineering firm, we photograph the process as well as the product: machines running, hands at work and the finished goods leaving the loading bay.

Made in Hertfordshire

Food, farming and producers from the Chess valley to the Lea

Hertfordshire still grows and makes things. The Chilterns National Landscape describes the watercress beds at Sarratt as the only commercial watercress farm left in the Chilterns. In the Lea Valley around Hoddesdon, the glasshouse industry includes cucumber farms run by descendants of families from the Sicilian villages of Cianciana and Mussomeli. Hitchin Lavender at Ickleford is run by sixth-generation farmers who have grown lavender for more than 25 years.

Producers like these need photographs that show the place as well as the product: the water running over the beds, the rows under glass, the harvest in the field. Those images work hard on a farm shop website, a stall at a food market and the packaging itself. We plan these shoots around the season and the weather, and take product close-ups on the same day.

The studio

Product photography at the Northwood studio

Smaller products are often better photographed at the studio, where the light and background stay identical from the first item to the last. That consistency matters for an online shop, where a customer scrolls through dozens of products and notices at once if the white is a different white. The studio is 3.6 miles from Bushey, 3.7 from Croxley Green and 3.8 from Watford.

Bring the products, any packaging you want shown and a list of the angles you need for each one: front, side, back, a detail and perhaps one styled shot. Jewellery, cosmetics, food, books and small electricals all work well on a tabletop set. For larger items, or a range too big to move, Kaushik brings the kit to your premises instead.

Planning and travel

Planning a commercial shoot anywhere in Herts

South-west Hertfordshire is close to the studio, and Croxley Park, Clarendon Road and Watford Business Park are all within five miles. St Albans and Hemel Hempstead are about eleven miles, and Stevenage, Hitchin and Letchworth Garden City are further north. Wherever your premises are, travel from Northwood is quoted up front in writing, alongside the shoot price, which is given on request.

For local detail, see the commercial pages for Watford, St Albans, Hemel Hempstead and Rickmansworth. Staff portraits are covered on the Hertfordshire headshots page, the national commercial photography page explains how shoots are planned, and the Hertfordshire photographer hub lists every service.

Planning

Planning around Hertfordshire

01

Start with the uses

List where each image will appear, website, adverts, packaging or social media, so the shot list and the crops are right from the start.

02

Shoot before opening

Shops, cafés and restaurants photograph best before customers arrive, with full shelves, clean tables and no queue at the counter.

03

Think about the season

Farm and garden businesses in Hertfordshire look their fullest from late spring to early autumn, so plan outdoor shoots for that window.

04

Keep a product list

A spreadsheet of items, colours and angles keeps a studio product day moving and makes sure nothing is left out.

Where Hertfordshire does business

These business districts and high streets come from council plans and business sources, and show where commerce gathers in Hertfordshire.

  • Head offices and sub-regional centre: Hertfordshire County Council designates Watford a major sub-regional centre, and its location near London and its transport links have attracted several companies to base their head offices in the town. 1
  • Rickmansworth town centre: Rickmansworth town centre, a short way east of Mill End, has Watersmeet, a 515-seat theatre owned by Three Rivers District Council whose auditorium can be turned into a flat floor for weddings, markets and events. 2
  • The Grove conference venue: The Grove, 18 miles from London near the M1 and M25 and about five minutes' drive from Watford Junction station, runs residential conferences with bedrooms, Sequoia Spa and private dining in Jemima's Kitchen Garden for event guests. 3
  • Croxley Park: Croxley Park near Watford (WD18 8AS) is a business park offering about 700,000 sq ft of office and business space across 13 buildings. 4
  • Centennial Park, Elstree: Centennial Park at Elstree is Hertsmere's designated Key Employment Site, covering 15 hectares of modern business premises about 2.5 km from Elstree & Borehamwood station. 5

Good to know

Commercial photography in Hertfordshire: questions answered

Product photography for online shops and catalogues, premises and interiors, staff at work, food and drink, advertising images and photographs for brochures and websites. Larger subjects are photographed on site anywhere in Hertfordshire, and smaller products can be photographed at the Northwood studio.

Yes. For a consistent online catalogue, the studio is usually the right place, because the light and background stay the same for every item. Bring the products and a list of the angles you need, and we will work through them in order.

Yes. We photograph offices, workshops, warehouses and production lines at business parks such as Watford Business Park, Croxley Park and Maylands. We agree any safety rules and protective clothing with you beforehand and work around your production schedule.

Yes. Advertising images need a clear idea and one strong frame, so we plan the concept with you, agree the shape needed for print or online, and shoot with the final layout in mind, leaving space for headlines and logos where needed.

Prices are given on request by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383, because commercial work varies so much in scale. Once we know what you need photographed, where and how the images will be used, we send a written quote that includes the travel line from Northwood.

Yes, and it often saves time. A typical combined day covers staff headshots in a meeting room in the morning and premises or products in the afternoon. The lighting is set up separately for each part, so both sets look right.

Yes. Photographs of people making, serving or advising give a business warmth that product shots alone cannot. We plan these around your working day, so staff carry on with real tasks while we photograph, and nobody needs to stop for long.

Kaushik Bathia, FBIPP and FMPA, photographs every session personally and has done so from the Northwood studio since 2001, with five European Kodak Gold Awards along the way.
