Hartham Common, riverside meadows beside the River Lea, is the portrait ground, and meadow light in the last hour is the softest thing available anywhere in the town. Hertford Castle, with its Norman motte and 15th-century gatehouse, is the landmark. Two stations, Hertford North on the Great Northern line and Hertford East to London Liverpool Street, keep London guests off the roads, and Bengeo, Brickendon and Stapleford are only minutes out.

A motte is a made hill, and for a camera that single property is the whole point: put a group on raised ground and the horizon drops below their shoulders, so sky sits behind heads instead of parked cars. The gatehouse arch does the reverse job as a dark surround, though it only works when the metering follows faces and the stonework is allowed to block up.
