The short answer

Is there a commercial photographer who covers Berkshire?

Yes. Kaushik Bathia photographs products, premises and staff for businesses across Berkshire, from Slough Trading Estate, about 10 miles from the Northwood studio, to Bracknell, Reading and Newbury. Shoots take place on site or, for smaller products, at the studio. Travel from Northwood is quoted up front in writing with the brief, and the price, which depends on the scope, is given on request.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Berkshire, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

The business map

Berkshire's working districts, from Slough to Bracknell

Slough Trading Estate was founded in 1920 on the site of a First World War army motor depot, and SEGRO now owns it as the largest industrial estate in single private ownership in Europe. Manufacturers, data centres, laboratories and distributors share its roads, and each needs pictures of a different kind: machinery in use, clean rooms, loading bays or a reception that tells visitors what the company is.

Bracknell grew as a new town after 1949, and its Southern Industrial Area is where Waitrose has its headquarters, with Fujitsu, Dell and HP among the firms with operations in the town. Further east, Slough is the base of the borough council at Observatory House, named after the site where William Herschel built his great telescope. For businesses in either town, a commercial shoot usually mixes building, product and people in one visit.

Products

Product photography for Berkshire makers and online sellers

Small products photograph well at the studio in Northwood Hills, about 10 miles from Slough, where a clean white background, consistent lighting and a steady camera position give a matching set for an online shop. You can drop items off or send them, and they are returned with the finished files. Larger or fragile items are photographed on site.

Lifestyle product pictures show the item in use: a kitchen gadget on a worktop, a piece of jewellery being worn, a bottle on a café table. Those are planned with a short brief listing every shot, the props and the sizes needed for your website, marketplaces and social media. Colour accuracy matters for anything sold online, so we check the finished files against the real product.

Premises

Shopfronts, interiors and town centres across the county

Berkshire's shopping streets vary a lot. The Lexicon in Bracknell, the regenerated town centre that opened in September 2017 with a 12-screen cinema, is modern and bright. Ascot's facilities are mainly geared to the racecourse, with a small range of shops on its wide High Street, which suits independent businesses that need a strong frontage picture. Each needs a different approach to light and timing.

Some businesses trade on history, and the county has plenty of it. Reading's economy was long defined by industries such as biscuit making at Huntley & Palmers, from 1822 to 1976, and Newbury's clothiers, led by John Winchcombe, known as Jack of Newbury, were highly regarded on the continent in the late 15th century. Hotels, inns and family firms with a story like that often want both heritage detail and present-day pictures.

People at work

Staff and working shots on site

Pictures of people doing their jobs often do more for a website than any product shot. On a commercial day Kaushik photographs staff at their workstations, on the shop floor or with customers, with natural direction rather than stiff posing. Where safety equipment is required, it is worn in the pictures, and we follow the site's rules on what may and may not be shown.

Formal staff portraits can be added on the same visit, using a portable backdrop in a spare room; the headshots in Berkshire page covers how a team headshot day runs. Combining the two saves a second trip and keeps the lighting and colours consistent across the whole set of images.

Planning

Briefs, usage and travel for a Berkshire commercial shoot

A good brief lists the shots, where they will be used and any deadlines. We send a short planning form and agree a shot list and timings before the day, including when to clear an area of customers, when staff are available and when the light falls best on the frontage. Files are delivered in sizes for web, print and social media.

Reading is about 26 miles from Northwood and Newbury about 42, and both are covered for on-site shoots. Wherever the business is, travel is set out in the written quote along with the brief, and the price is given on request by phone or WhatsApp. See the national commercial photography page for examples, and the Berkshire hub for every service in the county.

Planning

Planning around Berkshire

01

Send small products to the studio

Items that fit on a table can be dropped at or posted to Northwood Hills for a consistent white-background set, then returned with the files.

02

Clear the frontage early

For shopfronts on a busy street such as Ascot High Street or in The Lexicon, an early start before opening keeps people and vans out of frame.

03

Agree site safety in advance

On industrial units in Slough or Bracknell, we follow your site rules, wear the required equipment and agree which areas can be photographed.

04

One visit, three uses

Combining product, premises and staff pictures on one day gives matching light and colour across your website, brochure and social media.
