The short answer

Do you offer commercial and product photography in Essex?

Yes. Kaushik photographs products, shop fronts, interiors, food and staff for businesses across Essex, from Epping and Harlow to Chelmsford, Southend-on-Sea and Colchester. Smaller products can be photographed at the Northwood studio against a plain background; premises and people are photographed on site. Session prices are given on request, and travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Essex, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

What we photograph

Products, premises and people for Essex businesses

Commercial photography covers whatever a business needs to show. That might be a product range for an online shop, the interior of a restaurant or salon, a menu of dishes, a workshop at work, or the owners and staff who customers will meet. The aim is a set of images in one consistent style that you can use on a website, social media, print and listings for some time.

Each job starts with a short call about where the photographs will be used. An online shop needs clean, consistent product shots; a high street shop needs its frontage and its welcome; a trade business needs to show the work and the people doing it. Kaushik then plans the session around opening hours, so customers are not disturbed.

High streets

Shop fronts on Essex high streets

Essex has some handsome high streets to photograph. Epping High Street has listed buildings, mostly 18th century, on both sides of its conservation area, with 17th-century Beulah Lodge in Lindsey Street at one end, and the town has held a weekly Monday market since 1253. Billericay High Street is a conservation area too, home to the Cater Museum in a Grade II listed building.

A shop front looks its best early in the morning, before deliveries and parked cars fill the street, and on a bright, overcast day when there are no hard shadows. For a business in a conservation area, the character of the street is part of the appeal, so a wider view that shows the neighbouring buildings can work as well as a tight shot of the sign.

Business centres

Industrial estates, new towns and city centres

Some of the county's working premises are less picturesque but just as important. Debden's industrial estate in north-east Loughton, built after 1945, includes the old Bank of England printing works that De La Rue took over in 1993. Harlow's new town was built with industrial areas and a new town centre, and Basildon's centre, built after its designation as a new town in 1949, has Sir Basil Spence's 14-storey Brooke House.

Chelmsford, the county town, became a city in 2012 and is where Marconi opened the world's first wireless factory in 1899. Southend-on-Sea became a city in 2022 and Colchester later that year. A factory floor, a warehouse or an office needs a different approach from a shop, with attention to safety, lighting and what can be shown, and Kaushik will ask about any restrictions before the day.

Studio and location

When to use the studio and when to come to you

Small products, such as jewellery, cosmetics, food packaging or handmade goods, are often easier at the studio at 21 Joel Street, Northwood Hills. Plain backgrounds and controlled lighting keep a range consistent, and nobody needs to visit your premises. The studio is two minutes from Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line.

Premises, large products and people need a visit. The nearest Essex towns, Loughton, Chigwell and Epping, are 20 to 23 miles from the studio; Brentwood is about 31, Chelmsford about 39 and Colchester about 57. Travel from Northwood is set out in your written quote, and the shoot price is given by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383.

Planning

Locations, permissions and staff photographs

If you want an outdoor location for a campaign, check permission first. The City of London Corporation requires a licence for commercial photography in Epping Forest, and Colchester's council publishes photography charges for High Woods Country Park. Private estates and listed buildings need the owner's agreement. Your own premises, or a client's with their consent, are usually the simplest place to work.

Staff portraits often sit alongside commercial work, and they can be done on the same day. The Essex headshots page explains office headshot days, the national corporate headshots page covers larger teams, and the Essex overview lists everything else that can be arranged in the county.

Planning

Planning around Essex

01

Start with where images go

Tell us whether the photographs are for a website, an online shop, print or social media, so the framing and format suit each one.

02

Shoot shop fronts early

An early morning on a bright, overcast day keeps parked cars and hard shadows out of a high street photograph.

03

Bring small products to the studio

Jewellery, cosmetics and packaging can be photographed at Northwood, keeping a range consistent without a site visit.

04

Check location permissions

Epping Forest needs a City of London Corporation licence for commercial photography; High Woods Country Park has published photography charges.

Where Essex does business

Essex high streets and business areas where a product, premises or staff shoot might take place.

  • Epping Underground station: Epping station is the north-eastern terminus of the London Underground Central line, in fare zone 6; the station opened in 1865 and Underground services began in 1949. 1
  • Harlow Town station: Harlow Town station on the West Anglia Main Line, 36.6 km from London Liverpool Street and operated by Greater Anglia, opened in 1842 as Burnt Mill and was rebuilt for the new town in 1959-60; it has been Grade II listed since 1996. 2
  • Epping High Street conservation area: Listed buildings, mostly 18th century, line both sides of Epping High Street, and some of the oldest, such as 17th-century Beulah Lodge in Lindsey Street, sit at either end of the conservation area. 3

Any season works, but bright, overcast days avoid hard shadows, and early mornings keep the street clear. In a conservation area such as Epping or Billericay High Street, Christmas lights or market days can add life if you want them in the frame.

Every session is photographed by Kaushik Bathia himself, FBIPP and FMPA, holder of five European Kodak Gold Awards, who opened the Northwood studio in 2001.
