Ancient woodland is the defining asset, and the glades of Epping Forest are what to plan around from the start. Old trees create dappled light that can wreck a group photograph if the position is chosen carelessly, so the trick is to find open glade rather than closed canopy and to place everyone in even shade. For couple portraits the opposite applies, since the deep, textured woodland is the whole point. Gaynes Park, Blake Hall and the Kings Oak Hotel are the established venues, with Copped Hall nearby. Being the eastern terminus of the London Underground Central line means London guests arrive without cars, though the last train home is worth checking before the evening timings are fixed. North Weald, Coopersale and Thornwood are all close, useful when family need somewhere to stay near this market town.
