Ask the gurdwara first
Check where a photographer may stand during the laavan and any other photography rules the gurdwara has. Share the answer with us so we can plan the morning.

A Sikh wedding in Essex usually starts early in the gurdwara and ends late at a reception in another town. Kaushik photographs the anand karaj with care for gurdwara etiquette, and plans the rest of the day around the drive.
The short answer
Yes. Kaushik Bathia photographs Sikh weddings across Essex, covering the milni, the anand karaj and the four laavan in the gurdwara, the reception and the doli. He follows the rules of your gurdwara on head covering, shoes and where he may stand. Essex towns run from about 20 miles from the Northwood studio at Loughton to about 57 at Colchester, and travel is quoted in writing before you book.
…Kaushik's work is fantastic and he took so much stress out of our special day. He and his team are highly professional, fun and friendly and work with you to capture the shots that you want. He captured some amazing moments of both us and our guests, some natural, some posed but all truly wonderful. We were blown away by our albums and videos and have no hesitation in recommending him to our family and friends.
The Owner is very friendly and professional. I have been using Mr Bathia for over 15 years and have seen him through multiple family weddings.
Excellent photography services before and during our wedding. Really enjoyed him being our photographer and he did a great job with the pictures. Working with him on the albums post wedding has been fantastic, he takes time to understand our ideas and portrays them in his work. Brilliant personality and very professional.
The morning
Most anand karaj ceremonies start in the morning, so the day begins before breakfast. The baraat gathers outside the gurdwara, and the milni follows, with the elders of each family meeting and exchanging garlands. Kaushik positions himself so the faces of both families are visible, which usually means standing slightly to one side rather than in the middle of the path.
Inside the darbar hall, the couple sit before the Guru Granth Sahib. After the ardas, the granthi reads each of the four laavan, and the couple walk around the Guru Granth Sahib once for each verse, with close relatives often standing near to steady the couple. The ceremony ends with karah prashad, and the sangat moves to the langar hall.
Because the morning is tightly timed, ask your gurdwara what time the ceremony must start and when the hall must be cleared. Those two times shape everything else.

Etiquette
Kaushik covers his head, removes his shoes and leaves any food or tobacco outside, as any guest would. In the darbar hall he works quietly, sits or kneels low where he can, and never stands between the sangat and the Guru Granth Sahib. The camera is set to silent where it allows.
Rules differ from one gurdwara to the next. Some ask photographers to stay at the side or the back during the laavan; others allow a position nearer the front. Tell us your gurdwara and any photography guidance its committee or granthi gives, and Kaushik follows it throughout.
The same care carries on in the langar hall, where guests sit and eat together. Photographs there are relaxed and candid, taken without interrupting the serving.
The days before
A Sikh wedding often begins days before the anand karaj. The chunni ceremony, when the family the couple is joining presents a chunni, can be held at home or in a hall. The maiyan follows, with turmeric paste and plenty of family around, then the jaggo night, with the decorated pot of lamps carried through the house and out into the street, and the mehndi.
These events are usually at the family homes, which in Essex can be some distance apart. Epping is about 23 miles from the studio and Billericay about 36, so if a maiyan happens at a home in each on the same day, we plan them in turn and agree how long each needs.
Low ceilings and crowded front rooms are normal at home events. Kaushik works close and moves with the family as the jaggo pot is carried round, so the photographs still show the faces around the lamps.

After the gurdwara
After the langar, there is usually a gap of a few hours before the reception. The gap can be used for portraits and a rest. If the reception is in a different part of Essex, allow for the drive: a gurdwara in the Epping Forest towns and a reception near Chelmsford sit at opposite ends of the county's western half.
At the reception, the families' entrance, the speeches, the first dance and the bhangra all need their own space. Ask the venue where the dance floor will sit and whether the stage lighting is fixed, so we can plan the angles.
The doli closes the day with the family farewell at the home or the venue. It is a quiet, emotional moment and needs only a little space.
Legal and civil
Whether the anand karaj is legally binding depends on whether your gurdwara is registered for marriages and has an authorised person, so ask the gurdwara committee early. If it is not, a short civil ceremony is needed as well.
Essex County Council's registration service runs from County Hall on Market Road, Chelmsford, and lists over 130 licensed venues across the county. In Thurrock, the register office is run by Thurrock Council from its Civic Offices in Grays.
If the civil ceremony is on another date, Kaushik can photograph it as a short session, and it appears as its own line in the written quote, with the travel from Northwood set out alongside.

Town guides
Start with the towns nearest the studio: Sikh weddings in Chigwell, Loughton and Harlow. For the south of the county, read Grays and Basildon, and for mid Essex, Chelmsford.

Ask the families to carry spare rumals for guests who forget. It keeps the darbar hall photographs calm and respectful.
Agree the baraat's arrival time with the gurdwara, so the milni is not rushed before the ceremony must start.
List the chunni, maiyan, jaggo and mehndi with their towns. Essex family homes can sit at opposite ends of the county, so the order matters.
Tell us where the doli will happen and when, so the last photographs of the day are not lost in the rush.

Good to know
Yes. Kaushik photographs the milni, the laavan, karah prashad and the langar, following the rules of your gurdwara on where he may stand. Ask your committee before the day and share their guidance with us.
Yes, always. Kaushik covers his head and removes his shoes before entering the darbar hall, and keeps his movement quiet and low during the ceremony, as any guest would.
Wedding photography starts from £750. A Sikh wedding with a maiyan, jaggo, the anand karaj and a reception is quoted as a bespoke package, with each event, the album and any second photographer listed. Travel from Northwood is set out in writing.
Yes. The jaggo is lively and runs late, with lamps and dancing in the house and the street. Kaushik moves with the procession and keeps close to the pot of lamps, so faces stay clear without losing the warmth of the night.
Only if the gurdwara is registered for marriages and has an authorised person. Ask your committee, and if a civil ceremony is needed, contact the Essex County Council registration service in Chelmsford or, for Thurrock, Thurrock Council in Grays.
Anywhere in the county. Loughton and Chigwell are about 20 to 21 miles from Northwood, Harlow about 25, Basildon about 37 and Colchester about 57. Travel for each day is quoted up front in your written quote.
Yes. We agree the reception timings with you and the venue, and stay for the doli if it falls at the end of the evening. Let us know where it happens.
